Did you know that the first women to land on the Normandy beachhead in June 1944 were nurses of Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Nursing Service?
Their task was to establish a field hospital for 600 wounded soldiers.

#OnThisDay 82 yrs ago in 1944 #DDay Operation Neptune landed 156,000 Allied troops on 5 beaches in Normandy as part of the invasion of Europe. 6833 ships were used, including 5,300 warships and landing craft, 78% of which were British under @RoyalNavy & planned by Admiral Ramsay

#OnThisDay 1982 HMS SHEFFIELD is hit by Argentine Exocet becoming the first @RoyalNavy ship lost in action since 1945. Though the missile did not detonate it started fires that killed 20 sailors. 260 were rescued by HMS ARROW. SHEFFIELD later sank under tow #remember

Her long career almost ended a month into the war of 1812, when she fell in with a Royal Navy squadron. She used her boats and ditched all her water to escape the British in a chase lasting two days and nights.
