Holy moly, what a week! We are tired. We are excited. We are grateful. We are tired: Since we formally launched an independent Capital Weather on Tuesday, after 18 years with The Washington Post, we’ve covered storms on three straight days, had two heat advisories, and reached 100 degrees in DC on Friday. We are excited: With a brand new website at CapitalWeather.com, a brand new Capital Weather app, and no paywall for our core forecasts and updates, we are already reaching so many of you with a combination of our human forecasts and convenient modern weather tools. We are grateful: Many of you have already generously contributed to help us keep essential 24/7 DC-area weather coverage free for all. Your support is what makes this possible. We can’t thank you enough. For those of you who didn’t have a chance during the week, we invite you to take a moment this weekend and check out the various ways you can support us. Options range from our “contribute what you’d like” Fan level, to monthly or annual Friend contributions, to our annual Founder level. We love our Fans, Friends, and Founders all the same! Learn more about how you can boost and sustain our independent launch at: capitalweather.com/support-u…

⛈️ Heads up: Strong to severe storms are possible Sunday afternoon and evening. Damaging wind gusts over 57 mph are the primary threat — a tornado or large hail can't be ruled out. See CapitalWeather.com for latest thoughts on timing and intensity which could change slightly as we continue to evaluate information into early tomorrow. Hot and soupy backdrop Sunday: Highs near 90 to mid-90s, feeling as hot as 100° before storms arrive. 📅 Cooler and less humid to start the workweek. #DCwx #DMVwx #MDwx #VAwx

Storm season woke up for launch week. After a quiet start to June, the DC area saw three straight active storm days — including damaging winds, needed rain, and at least one fatality from a falling tree. Photo by Jeanette Cook. Summary maps for Thursday and Friday by us.

So many awesome sky shots Friday night. This was definitely an upper echelon sunset. Here are a several more amazing photos: Credits: * Washington D.C. Compared to Friday's 100 in DC, today will feel cool. It could still tickle 90 some spots. Lower humidity... Heat and muggies back in town Sunday. Strong storms may join in late, yet again. Details, and a cooler start to work week at capitalweather.com (Photo by Kevin Ambrose)

So happy I was able to get out of the house to see this storm. The lightning, thunder, rain, and rainbow… all of it was beautiful. #thunderstorm #lightning #virginia #weather #potomacriver @capitalweather @WashingtonianWx @JustinWeather
