I recently joined a Q&A session at the University of Europe for Applied Sciences (UE) in Dubai. Hosted by Prof. Dahlia Mahmoud and moderated by fellow social impact leader
@CarlManlan, the event gathered students and guests to explore the power of purpose in business. The conversation covered my journey, vision, and mission to bridge the private sector and social impact space, showing how to translate private sector expertise into meaningful social impact.
The discussion touched upon core concepts from my book, Brands on a Mission, highlighting the potential of using brands to drive real-world change and business growth. This included understanding the value of impact, referencing my work on the Lifebuoy brand and spearheading Global Handwashing Day, which influenced the hygiene behavior of one billion people. The session also offered a look at what’s possible in the social impact space, especially within the United Arab Emirates, concluding with a brainstorming on future opportunities.
The conversation covered several themes relevant to today’s purposeful business landscape. It delved into Performance Cultures, discussing how to build an environment where purpose drives both impact and growth. It also explored Mass Behavior Change, drawing lessons from the
@Brandsonmission work, and the role of Health and Wellbeing as a Core Mission, where brands tackle public health issues, from hygiene to battling self-esteem and domestic violence, by changing habits and attitudes. Finally, the session, also featuring Carl Manlan, highlighted Inclusive Economies, emphasizing how innovation must meet purpose to create financial inclusion and sustainable change. Thank you to Professor Dahlia Mahmoud and Carl Manlan for making this insightful conversation happen!
