A few years ago Andy was homeless and dumpster diving milk now he wants four wheel drive and REI. We will make a normie of him yet, folks.
Really seems to me that a solid hot tent a 4-door 4WD Tacoma cannot be beat for long-term travel in the USA.
As I slowly make peace with possibly leaving NYS, we're getting more serious about taking a 1-2 year long scouting trip for a new place to settle. The Tacoma hot tent combo strikes me as the ideal platform for that purpose. A go-everywhere, do-it-all setup that doesn't require expensive, pain-in-the-rear-end RV's and such.
Can sleep in the bed of the truck a night here or there to save on motels when we're underway, but the idea is to get to an area of interest and to stay in the tent a few weeks at a time. But we'd spring for a real fantastic tent; one with a wood stove, double-wall, ample furnishings. Solar shower on the truck, thick down bedding, the works.
"Nortent" out of Norway seems to have some of the best offerings out there so far as tents go -- or possibly Springbar's "Skyliner" canvas wall tent. Solid, windproof, fireproof, and with the right stove you can keep them burning all night.
We'd mostly be south for the winter of course. Route would involve Upper Peninsula Michigan, parts of ND, NE, and WY, northern NV, southern AZ and NM, West TX, and possibly even SE Alaska.
From all my years of experience traveling, I cannot imagine a better setup for a trip of this type and duration. And I know people will say RV's and vans are better because you can sleep in them -- but honestly, if you're gonna be in the Western US, there's room to camp. Far as we're concerned, it's way nicer to sleep on the ground in a top-notch tent than in a hot metal box.
