Many people are delighting in the fact that Mr. Sam Shamoun is being criticised and condemned on several social media platforms. Some people say he deserves it whereas others say it’s not fair, be patient, give him another chance. What’s your view? Mr. Shamoun, born in Kuwait in 1972, is a hot topic on the internet. For some, Sam is a highly controversial character who desperately needs counselling or at least needs a break from the heavy psychological pressure he’s under. Sam is very active, livestreaming daily. He churns out a high volume of hours of YouTube content on a weekly basis. He doesn’t tend to engage in moderated debates and structured discussions but has himself become the subject of debate and discussion. Some believe “Sam is the man” and some believe “Sam is a sham.” You’ll have your own opinion. Here, it will be helpful to explore a broad and varied selection of comments from Christians across the spectrum, Roman Catholics and Protestants alike, those of the Arminian and Calvinistic persuasions, Christians representing the Eastern Orthodox and the Assyrian Church of the East positions too. In fact, both atheists and agnostics have been intrigued by the recent controversy and have chipped in with their own comments also. It’s a controversy that won’t go away. It’s become too big to ignore. Let me also then come forward to say something about the controversy surrounding Sam Shamoun which has erupted on social media in recent days. I personally do not know the man, but I know that he is a public figure with a high profile. I know also that he has won over passionate followers and gained plenty of enemies over the years in his ministry in the arena of apologetics. Some people like him yet some people hate him, and both sides give their reasons. His admirers say he defends trinitarian Christianity against Islam and Unitarians, whereas the people who loathe him claim that though he has memorised numerous scripture verse references and has encyclopaedic ecclesiastic and qur’anic facts at his fingertips, he is abrasive, offensive, unconstructive and divisive. “Pride comes before a fall” is a maxim. I’ll invite you then to focus and to give the topic your good attention, dear reader. This is urgent. This is a short reflection, a simple, balanced, practical and direct message that will help you, and me, and Sam, and others. Pass it on prayerfully please. If you’re on social media these days, you can’t avoid The Big Sam Shamoun Debate. There are far too many comments on YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and on X (Twitter) and elsewhere to read through in a day or in a week.
