From losing market share to gaining massive market share. All about the $$$, not about medicine or public health.
Marijuana is now the most common drug among first-time entrants to substance use treatment in Europe. This comes amid new reports that Altria is entering the Netherlands' marijuana market. That’s right, Big Tobacco and Big Marijuana are now one and the same. thedrugreport.org/2026/06/11…

From another IASIC advisor from Yale @IASIC3 Modern high-potency cannabis may be changing the landscape of psychotic disorders. Cannabis psychosis may be more than a temporary drug-induced condition. Continued cannabis (THC) use may triple relapse risk despite taking antipsychotics. Daily use and high-potency THC increase psychosis risk in a dose-dependent manner. (More is worse.) psychologytoday.com/us/blog/…

The company that spent decades getting the world hooked on cigarettes now wants in on legal weed. Altria (Philip Morris) is buying its way into the Dutch market—just as it did in Canada. Big Tobacco knows an addiction-for-profit industry when it sees one. nltimes.nl/2026/06/10/mps-co…

There is additional data showing those using cannabis may have higher hospital lengths of stay, consume more opioids, and higher postoperative complications.
New study just dropped, and it's another nail in the coffin of the "marijuana is harmless" myth. Cannabis Use Disorder doesn't just wreck your brain. It wrecks your body's ability to heal from surgery. The numbers are staggering. 🧵

Could marijuana be headed for its own Big Tobacco moment? A new federal class-action lawsuit accuses cannabis companies of downplaying risks while marketing marijuana for anxiety and sleep relief. Critics point to links between heavy cannabis use, psychosis, rising ER visits, and high-potency products with far less oversight than tobacco or alcohol. I spoke with addiction specialist John Puls about whether warning labels and tighter regulations may be next.

⚠️ A high-profile murder trial raised important questions about cannabis and psychosis. In the trial of Eddie Ray Routh, the man convicted of killing American Sniper author Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield, a forensic psychologist testified that Routh suffered from a paranoid disorder worsened by alcohol and marijuana use, describing it as "cannabis-induced psychosis." The jury ultimately rejected an insanity defense and convicted him of capital murder. While most cannabis users will never experience psychosis, research shows that heavy use—especially high-THC products and use among vulnerable individuals—can increase the risk of psychotic symptoms and serious mental health consequences. New research highlights what many families are experiencing firsthand: parents report that youth cannabis use can worsen—or even trigger—serious mental health challenges in some young people. Parents described emotional and financial strain, difficulty finding informed treatment, and a lack of public awareness about cannabis-related mental health risks. The study calls for better public health education, stronger clinician training, improved family support services, and greater oversight of high-potency cannabis products. A new study of 2,155 college students found that cannabis use, non-prescribed stimulant use, and combining alcohol with stimulants were associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms. Adverse childhood experiences were also a significant predictor of depression. Notably, researchers highlighted findings from Texas A&M showing that recent alcohol use alone was not associated with depression, while recent cannabis use alone was. Somewhat surprisingly, cannabis plus alcohol use was not associated with depression, even though cannabis-only use was. As colleges face growing mental health challenges, these findings underscore the need for prevention efforts that address substance use, mental health, and the lasting impact of childhood trauma. Yup
Between 1983 and 1988, crack cocaine was linked to 3,466–6,057 deaths across 25 major metro areas. From 2020 to 2024, kratom was linked to 5,208 deaths. So why is one remembered as a national drug crisis while the other is sold at gas stations with cartoon branding?

New national data: About 6% of U.S. cannabis users reported past-year Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS). Higher risk was linked to high-THC concentrates, edibles, riskier cannabis use patterns, and alcohol use.
