The customer identification rule that governs how banks verify who you are has not been substantively rewritten since 2003. The data it relies on — Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses — is no longer secret.
Breach after breach has put that information in the hands of anyone willing to pay for it. Generative AI can now produce convincing identity documents at near-zero cost. The system is broken.
KYC is coming for centralized peer-to-peer crypto services. That is not a question. The question is whether the rule they inherit will be the same rigid, fraud-prone architecture that plagues traditional finance, or something better.
Cryptographically verifiable credentials exist. Zero-knowledge proofs exist. Standards from NIST, W3C, and ISO are mature. A customer can prove what an institution needs to know without handing over a database full of sensitive personal data that will eventually be breached.
The technology is ready. Regulatory recognition is the gap.
Today, @Consensys filed a comment letter with FinCEN and @USTreasury urging them to close that gap. For consumers. For competition. For a compliance framework that actually defeats fraud instead of creating the illusion of defeating it.
