Unfortunately this mirrors the views of hundreds of CST applicants - national selection is increasingly an embarrassment to the surgical profession and needs sorting!

Applying for CST this year: -The portfolio is changed weeks before the deadline, a lot of points I'd previously worked for are lost. -MSRA is introduced first as a worrying rumour and THEN confirmed by CST. Forced to revise 99% non-surgical content.

I performed over 1200 operation as a trainee surgeon. These are the lessons I learnt over 8 years. How to get the most out of theatre time as a trainee 🧵.

Great to see IMGs succeeding in surgery, no obstacle is insurmountable, congratulations @UroNoel
Thank you. As an IMG, I was told of the many obstacles to progress in postgrad #surgery. I’m humbled to join the amazing institutes of @GSTTnhs & @LG_NHS in providing #prostatecancer care and #roboticsurgery. I hope this encourages some.

A very interesting 🧵on how stats can be misused in medical research - sounds a lot like the famously terrible Freemantle papers that were used as a political tool to impose the 2016 junior doctor contract changes
You may have heard the shocking headline that 250,000 people die every year in the US due to misdiagnosis in the ER. You may be even more shocked to know that this statistic is extrapolated from the death of... just one man. in a Canadian ER. over a decade ago.

PRIVATE MEDICINE IS NOT THE SOLUTION! It is extravagant, inequitable and easily leads to over treatment. Socialised healthcare systems like the NHS work fine in Scandinavia. The problem with the NHS is the Tory Party, not the principle of tax-funded equal medical treatment for all

DON’T APOLOGISE for not being given the infrastructure you need to do your job this was something I tried for a day recently and it was very refreshing. PC taking 15m to boot up so you can’t read the observations/labs to the consultant, or scribe for them? do NOT say “sorry”.

We’ve all been there. Or when you hold out your hand for the next instrument (not knowing what you need) and hope the scrub nurse doesn’t leave you hanging

Every trainee surgeon will know about the moment when you are given the scalpel and are not 100% sure about the next move to make, but don't want to give up the training opportunity. So you proceed slowly and safely but rather inefficiently knowing you are not impressing anyone.
