Excited that @Nottingham_Jim and I have a piece out in @philosophersmag on our recent work with @PhiloPrison. It was a great opportunity to reflect on the value of philosophy in prison and lovely to co-author (a dismally rare phenomenon in philosophy) tinyurl.com/4hk86scm
Important and grim report, confirming the extent of dire conditions in UK prisons throughout covid. Note that regimes in many prisons are still limited, with paucity of time out of cells, activities, and resources, eg at one prison a longstanding toilet paper shortage
So glad that the Guardian has picked up the report we wrote with @uservoice on the tragedy that is unfolding in prisons over the past two years. Please RT (1/3) theguardian.com/society/2022…
No toilet paper might seem banal in comparison with contents of report, but ought not be, and is rather indicative of how prisoners are routinely treated without dignity, respect, and humanity

Nice piece on Christopher's fantastic work at HMP Swaleside, including a collab with @PhiloPrison - 'The sessions help the men to “develop their own voices [...] One of the chaps last week said to me, This session has lifted me out of prison for half an hour".'
From teacher to prison officer – how one man is changing prisoners’ lives through education.
Great article on the brilliant work of @unlockedgradsinews.co.uk/news/education/t…
Started a new job at the Department for Transport yesterday. So, as I wait on a delayed train on my way to work, I can now feel both annoyed and a (so far unwarranted) sense of responsibility #lifegoals
We had fantastic celebration events to mark the end of our first full @PhiloPrison philosophy courses at @HMPSwaleside yesterday. Inspiring coursework presentations from participants on freedom, happiness, time, morality, perception, and more. Philosophy at its best! @RIPhilo
Congratulations to the men who completed philosophy courses at @HMPSwaleside yesterday and gave the most brilliant presentations of their work - poems, essays, dialogues, paintings, music, rap. A day of inspiration, thank you!!! @PhiloPrison@RIPhilo
Back from @theBSHP conference in Edinburgh, which was really excellent. Fantastic talks, conversations, and lots of lovely people. So pleased I could go. AND I got to enjoy Arthur's Seat again, complete with this bloke in full garb
Philosophy qu. @PhiloPrison needs short stories ( very short, read aloud in 10mins or so) that pose a good philosophical puzzle, no obvious triggers. Two so far, Le Guin’s ‘ the ones who go from Omelas’, Lem’s ‘the princess Ineffabelle’. Suggestions very much appreciated.
Excited to be talking at the @philosophyuea Research Seminar today. I'll be discussing Aristotle, virtue epistemology, and the role of virtuous motives for explaining the value of epistemic goods. I think it's my first, in-person, research talk since the pandemic. Can't wait!
Idea for a TV show - a philosopher does DIY. I drill holes around the house. No shelves go up. Instead of admitting my inability, I feign that I'm held up thinking about the metaphysical status of holes. In the final scene I do a Thales and fall into a well.
Philosophers and particularly ethicists: what are the best real life moral dilemmas for discussing consequentialism vs. non-consequentialism? Context: for use on a discussion-based, philosophy course in prison (please read on)
Thanks so much for all the suggestions and interesting thoughts. I'm wiped after teaching at one prison today and have another to prep for tomorrow morning. So, with poor Twitter etiquette, I'll reply everyone tomorrow afternoon!
