Available now- Cultural Engineering Studies Vol. 3! Order your copy of our latest volume of Cultural Engineering Studies, which takes up the theme of Neo-Gnosticism and examines its role in shaping the deeper logic of modern film, media, politics, and cultural engineering. Inside, you can find articles that trace the myths of false liberation, spiritual inversion, and manufactured rebellion that have helped form the modern imagination. Featuring "How Medical Authority Weaponized Celebrity Culture" by Joshua Stylman.  In this exclusive article for CES, Joshua Stylman (@jstylman) explains how “the machinery of celebrity worship” was leveraged to promote submission to medical authority during the COVID event. The very concept of “celebrity,” he explains, emerged in part as a function of advertising and PR, and over the decades it has developed into a formidable weapon of “institutional control.” Online health influencers and digital age successors of celebrity culture build followings by urging people to “trust their bodies” only to reverse this message in lockstep with the WHO, the Gates Foundation, and other institutions coordinating the COVID operation. This latest wave of weaponized celebrity culture, moreover, is designed to give way to a “post-celebrity phase of control,” in which “wearable” tech keyed to AI algorithms encroaches still further on bio-medical autonomy in a bid to eliminate the “wisdom of the body” altogether.

🧵 1/5 In light of the White House's recent disclosure-related document dump, let's examine a previous example of the US Federal Government preparing the public for alien contact while reinforcing its central role as protector. 👽🛸😵 The 1997 film "Contact", directed by Robert Zemeckis and based on Carl Sagan’s novel, remains a landmark in thoughtful science fiction. It explores SETI, first contact, and the tensions between science, faith, and politics. Yet beneath its philosophical surface lies a lesser-known story: substantial involvement by the US federal government and connected agencies in shaping its narrative. Far from passive consultation, this collaboration allowed officials to refine depictions of authority, neutralize potential critiques, and subtly advance public perceptions of institutional readiness for cosmic challenges.

🧵4/5: From a strategic perspective, "Contact" served dual purposes: For the government, it humanized the machinery of national security and scientific bureaucracy by portraying officials (despite flaws) as ultimately rational actors prioritizing humanity’s interests. This helped normalize ideas of federal readiness for existential scenarios, from signal verification to international machine-building efforts. Such storytelling was intended to subtly bolster public trust in institutions handling unknown frontiers, while discouraging overly conspiratorial or anti-authority interpretations.  The collaboration exemplifies a pattern: Hollywood gains production support and verisimilitude; agencies shape cultural narratives to their advantage. Here, the film subtly advocates for science-government partnership, creating a narrative that is palatable and enduring.

🧵5/5 In sum, "Contact" stands as a case study in soft power through cinema. Government shaping helped transform a speculative story into one that reassures audiences about institutional competence amid the unknown, while using the film’s reach to model desired behaviors and perceptions around discovery and authority. CNN Worked With The FBI To Create Dana Bash’s Antisemitism Documentary, Emails Reveal By Patrick Howley (@HowleyReporter) 🧵 1/8 CNN actively worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to put together Dana Bash’s 2022 documentary Rising Hate: Antisemitism in America.  Bombshell emails obtained by the Decoding Culture Foundation show how the cable news network coordinated with the FBI to push propaganda painting antisemitism as a massive problem in America, underscoring the extent to which the mainstream media collaborates with federal government agencies to advance preferred narratives. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which partnered with the FBI for many years, promoted a clip of the group’s participation in the special on its Youtube page. The heavily-promoted documentary can trace its origins, in part, to media-government collusion.  youtube.com/watch?v=gQ-XHtav…  CNN producer Courtney Yager reached out to the FBI in 2022 to ask for an interview with an FBI agent on an Islamist hostage-taking. But the CNN-FBI relationship soon became more involved as the scope of the documentary broadened to focus on antisemitism in general.

🧵 7/8 The FBI works with the “Secure Community Network,” according to the documentary. That well-funded nonprofit organization acts as a broker for Jewish groups to get grants from the Department of Homeland Security.
