The problem with the American anti-imperialist left is that, in many cases, their activism is built around a savior complex that expects the oppressed to operate within a monolithic victimization tied to a preferred political identity, one that ultimately serves the agenda of the savior (in this case, the anti-imperialist left). When said victim does not act as expected, they are met with vitriol and disdain.
This is why the Western left often has disdain for diaspora communities, because they can’t fit them into their preferred ideological box.
