The Notre Dame College Republicans got caught calling for the President to defy the Supreme Court. Now they’re backpedaling. “We’re not against the rule of law in principle, but it’s been dead for decades.” Read that again. They are students at a Catholic university arguing that because they believe others violated norms, their side is now entitled to destroy the constitutional order. That is not an argument. That is the logic of every authoritarian movement in history: the other side did it first.
I’m not woke. I oppose wokeness from both sides. I agree that progressive overreach on vaccines, immigration, and judicial activism was real. But here is what these students will not say: none of that justifies a President defying the Supreme Court by executive decree hours after losing 6-3. None of it. The answer to lawlessness is not more lawlessness. The answer to norm erosion is not constitutional demolition. A Catholic university should know this. Aquinas wrote about it. The natural law tradition they claim to inherit says exactly the opposite of what they are arguing.
And here is what exposes them completely. They list every Democratic sin they can remember. Vaccines. Immigration. Abortion. DEI. But they cannot find a single word about: a President who called child rape “boring stuff”; a Cabinet member who visited Epstein’s island and lied; an Attorney General who calls survivors “theatrics”; a Congress that exonerated the President on Fox News without investigation; a DOJ that has produced zero arrests while the UK, France, and Norway have all acted.
They see every violation on the left with perfect clarity. They are blind to a pedophile plutocracy operating from inside their own movement. That is not principle. That is tribal loyalty disguised as philosophy. And calling rights “fictional” while defending a man who shields sex traffickers tells you everything about what their Christianity actually protects.
The Founders they invoke built a system of checks precisely because they knew power corrupts. These students are arguing that because corruption exists, checks should be abandoned. That is not conservatism. That is surrender to a strongman. And Notre Dame; the university of Hesburgh; deserves better than students who quote the Founders to justify burying them. 💀🎪
