From July “However, there is a more significant change working its way through US courts…(that) will either limit President’s ability to impose tariffs–or reinforce it. This means Canada should not rush into a deal w/ Trump & should instead wait it out.” theglobeandmail.com/business…

politico.com/news/2026/02/11… Original IEEPA legislation required only concurrent resolution, simple majority in both houses to override executive order on tariffs. Unrelated case, Immigration & Naturalization Service v. Chadha (1983), struck use of concurrent resolutions to do this.

Below👇 is a perfect example of the shambolic incoherence of Alberta separatism. Bruce and Keith are the leading legal theorists around Alberta separation. They’re both intelligent guys who I respect. One says separation would have no impact on treaties with First Nations. The other says separation would end the treaties and lead to a complete reset on aboriginal rights. This is not a small detail. The history of Alberta separatism is one of constant infighting. That’s why dozens of separatist groups and parties have come and gone over the past 50 years. Some of the separatists are convinced that it means cold turkey secession. Others say it’s a license to become half-pregnant by negotiating a “sovereignty association” fantasy. Others claim already to be discussing with the US Administration annexation by the United States. Folks that can’t even agree on what separation means, or its fundamental implications, have no business dragging us all into a highly months long shouting match that will leave permanent divisions, and undermine investor confidence in Alberta.
I beg to differ. Independence is a repudiation of the existing constitutional order. Treaty rights and Aboriginal rights are part of that order. Independence means a fresh start, and a chance to fix old ideas that no longer make sense. A successful referendum gives a mandate to negotiate terms to leave. Everything will be on the table in those negotiations. Treaties were deals made with the Crown. In an independent Alberta, if done right, there will be no Crown. Authority will eminate from the people. In a free and independent Alberta, all citizens should be subject to the same laws and standards. Special status and entitlements based upon lineage and group identity should not exist
