India just got its first celebrity brand valuation report, and the result is not particularly surprising. Virat Kohli leads the way as the most valuable celebrity, with a brand value of Rs 3,542 crore, ahead of Shah Rukh Khan (Rs 3,017 crore) and Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Rs 2,507 crore).
A few numbers from the top ten that are worth pondering. MS Dhoni ranks fourth at Rs 2,141 crore, years after his last international game. Sachin Tendulkar is eighth at Rs 1,676 crore. Both are proof that brand equity, built right, outlasts the career that created it.
But perhaps even more compelling is Allu Arjun at tenth, valued at Rs 1,522 crore, His presence makes a pointed statement; that regional cinema has arrived on the national stage, and is not just a fringe player.
So what sustains a number like Brand Kohli’s Rs 3,542 crore valuation? The answer the report seems to offer is consistency: of identity, of values, and of the kind of engagement that holds the audience attention through its authenticity and charisma. India’s budding brand-builders and celebs would do well to heed that lesson.
