I would be interesting to know exactly how much the average voter thinks pensions should be.. but tied with exactly how much workers are willing to pay. Cuts to other types of welfare aren't going to make it cost neutral after all
Replying to @MrJCrouch
And while voters are broadly willing to say welfare spending is too high, we remain a very long way from any major voter group believing the government spends too much on pensions. When people talk about cutting "welfare", they don't mean a massive chunk of the welfare state.

Proper ridiculous this.. though perhaps it aligns with a point of view that is unwilling to defend, therefore sees no utility in funding it... Not one I'd want to vote for.
Replying to @MrJCrouch
The difficulties become even clearer with Green voters. Among Green voters, welfare is seen as more underfunded than defence. So Burnham's argument is aimed squarely at one set of voters while potentially alienating another.

This week the most advanced AI model on the planet got switched off by a foreign government. British researchers were studying it. British companies were testing it. British hospitals were piloting it. Not any more. This isn't an AI story. It's the story of every industry we used to lead. Britain has some of the best AI talent in the world. DeepMind was built here. Our AI Safety Institute writes the rules other countries follow. We have the researchers, the universities, the standards. What we don't have is the power stations to run the data centres, the planning system to build them, or the industrial base to make the chips. So the work happens here and the value lands somewhere else. We invent. Others build. Others decide. Then we read about it on Saturday morning. Same story as the kit our soldiers don't have. Same story as the factories we used to. I spent nine months in government making this argument inside the room. I'll make it louder from outside.
The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible. Read our full statement: anthropic.com/news/fable-myt…

Got excited for a second only to realise that it blocks most things related to biology.. which as a scientist with a bio background, makes it pretty useless 🙄 Guess I'll wait until it's able to differentiate between benign requests and people who want to be bioterrorists..

I spoke to dozens of Labour voters in Makerfield today. ONE said that Burnham wasn’t a factor in their decision. Even multiple Reform voters said they liked him. Maybe talk to these people @Keir_Starmer? Leave the bunker?
BIG story tonight! EXCL: Keir Starmer will fight a leadership election against Andy Burnham if one is triggered. PM spoke to key supporters this weekend and told them he will "fight" any challenge. thesun.co.uk/news/39328594/k…

This is good. We shouldn't want for a coronation. The ideal is for Andy Burnham to win Makerfield on a high margin, immediately challenge Starmer, and win overwhelmingly.. which would happen in any electorate with any sense.

The scenario that Burnham beats Reform significantly and the Labour party membership DOESNT elect him is a Labour Party that deserves it's fate. Most loathed Labour PM and government Vs the most positively viewed Labour politician that just beat Reform should be an easy choice

Honestly... Fair enough. They'd probably do more harm than good, and they certainly wouldn't like what the people of Makerfield, Wigan have to say about Keir Starmer. Too big a pill to swallow for people intent on putting fingers in ears to avoid confronting reality..
EXC: Labour MPs opposed to a leadership contest are refusing to campaign for Andy Burnham in the Makerfield by-election One Labour MP who has decided not to campaign said it would be ‘an act of self harm’ politicshome.com/news/articl…

GOOD, absolutely correct. It would be an act of extreme stupidity on the part of Labour to voluntarily throw away MP's seats & huge majority to Reform, on some lofty idea of principle. Would never see such acts of vandalism from the Tories. Use the majority to change the country!
Exclusive: Andy Burnham will not call an early election if he becomes PM His spokesperson says he is ruling out a snap election It means he’d likely govern to 2029 if he successfully challenges Starmer this summer The move by his campaign to end speculation about an early vote comes after reports in recent days that he’s been considering it Harriet Harman and others in Labour have talked up the possibility It will come as a relief to Labour MPs worried about losing their seats bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

..also nevermind the idea that we'd be asking the people of Makerfield to elect a guy, only to have to do it all again in a few weeks. God no. So so dumb.

The Soho Society is objecting to *every* new bar/restaurant licence in what is supposed to be the centre of London’s nightlife. More planning/licensing insanity. I asked them to come on my Sunday LBC show: "We will absolutely not be taking questions from journalists". Of course not. theguardian.com/uk-news/2026…

Five days later, Labour are now favourites to win the most seats at the next General Election Labour - 13/8 Reform UK - 7/4 Conservatives - 9/2 Restore Britain - 12/1 Green Party - 16/1 Liberal Democrats - 40/1 200/1 bar
We're almost certainly now at a point where Labour will become the new favourites in the Most Seats market if they win in Makerfield, if not before
