The Russians demonstrate the use of “Courier” UGVs equipped with ten UDSh smoke dispensers to create huge smokescreens. They reveal that their intent is to decoy Ukrainian drone forces while an assault takes place elsewhere. 1/
A Russian UGV lays UDSh smoke landmines that obscures a large area of the front. Apparently this was not connected with an assault, so likely a troop rotation or casualty evacuation was covered. Thermal cameras would be able to see through the smoke.

1/7 Short🧵with photos & case studies attached. Current events have thrown into sharp focus the need to understand urban warfare & its historical lessons learned. May I suggest the following case studies from the @WarInstitute written by @SpencerGuard, @LiamSCollins & myself.

In 1840 an American slave ship ran aground in the Bahamas. On British ground, the 38 people below deck could not be owned. 🇬🇧 Free Black boatmen rowed out, magistrates came aboard, and all 38 walked ashore free. 19 October 1840. The Hermosa, a schooner out of Richmond, Virginia, bound for the slave markets of New Orleans. Below deck, 38 enslaved people. Her papers listed them as cargo. She struck a reef off Abaco, in the Bahamas. British ground. Bahamian boatmen rowed out through the surf, free Black men who worked these reefs for a living, and carried all 38 safe to Nassau. Britain had abolished slavery 6 years before. The captain refused to let them ashore. He called for another ship to carry them back to bondage. Then British magistrates came aboard, armed men at their backs. No fleet. No proclamation. A local court doing its ordinary work. In Virginia, paper made those 38 people property. On British ground, no paper on Earth could. One by one, 38 people stepped ashore at Nassau. Free. The owners demanded them back for years. They never got them. Nobody famous freed those 38. Boatmen rowed out. Magistrates climbed aboard. Ordinary hands, keeping Britain's word. In Virginia, paper made them property. On British ground, thanks to the British citizens, it could not. 🇬🇧 This is the revival of British culture. Be part of it. 👉 proudofus.co.uk/support 👈 Be part of us. ☝️🇬🇧 Be Proud Of Us. 🙏🇬🇧

This is the @irish_guards using an in-barracks CQB/UAS facility they built themselves. They train their own drone operators, build their own drones & train almost daily. All built off initiatives from their own ranks.I had the pleasure to visit a while back. Cracking job! 🤜💥🤛

You do know that on May 9th 1941, Sub-Lieutenant David Balme RN from HMS Bulldog under orders from Commander Joe Baker-Cresswell RN, captured the enigma and cyphers from U110. The enigma was taken to Bletchley park where Alan Turing and his team broke enigma.

The Kings of the Battlefield. A branch I have called upon but never been a part of. The amazing skills & discipline of the @royalartillery1 saved the day in the dark moments of 1940, and are still a foundation to modern warfare. Break away, Brew up & Breathe

They took a B-17 that had been left for scrap, rebuilt it by hand, and bolted on so many extra machine guns it became one of the most heavily armed bombers in the Pacific. Then they volunteered for a solo mission over enemy territory that few crews wanted. Its tail number was 666. This is the story of the Eager Beavers..🧵1/7

Two urban battles occurred in Khorramshahr, Iran, both during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988): 1. 22 September-10 November 1980; and 2. 24 April-24 May 1982. Mostly dismounted personnel here; use of machine-guns, RPGs, mouseholes, loopholes. Thanks to @Zoma3mk for the post.

From a Ukrainian Armed Forces publication regarding drones in urban combat: “future military operations are likely to include more urban combats, asymmetric threats, and hybrid warfare, where clear front lines are absent. In such conditions, technologies such as drones or [AI] systems can play a supporting role, but only infantrymen can effectively operate in complex environments. For example, in densely populated cities, soldiers “on the ground” are needed to interact with civilians, make quick decisions in unpredictable situations, and perform tasks that require human judgment. Machines cannot yet fully replace this unique human ability to adapt to the chaos of war." "The tactics of the infantry of the future will be flexible and autonomous… However, we do not abandon classical methods. In urban areas or dense forests, where technology is limited, the physical presence and unconventional solutions of the infantryman are indispensable.”
