RT @NMenonRao: What strikes me is not so much the original post by @suhasinih as the quality of the debate that follows. Almost immediately…

When you raid a store of goodwill your predecessors have left behind for you, it feels really great. As if a new era has opened. Until the store becomes empty and everyone realises that you created virtually nothing and was simply coasting along on the achievements of your predecessors. In foreign affairs, in economy, in institutional credibility. The crash that follows can be very hurting emotionally.

To praise the PM for chronological reasons, you have to thread a really small needle. One word out of place, and it doesn't work. "Longest continuously serving elected prime minister" is not the same as 'the longest serving prime minister' or even the 'longest serving elected prime minister' who are, respectively, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. It is funny to see how many worthies have rushed in with congratulatory statements that are utterly baseless and untrue :)

It's great to see an Indian news agency following the kind of standardisation procedures adopted by McDonald's to ensure that a Big Mac in Nice, France tastes exactly the same as in Bratislava, Slovakia.
ANI coverage of PM Modi's foreign trips.. Step 1 PM says bye bye to everyone in India while boarding a plane. No sounds. Cinematic music and shots. Step 2 Watches Indian dance music programme of women abroad. Make sure there are white people performing too. Look serious and interested Step 3 Ask NRIs to say how much they love Modiji and how fortunate they are to see their bhagwaan from motherland who has done so much development in India. Step 4 Make sure no one hears him speak. EVER.Never show the press asking him questions. Mute videos. Edit. Edit. Edit. The End.

Living in 100% Amrit Kaal, driving 80% ethanol cars, breathing 60% polluted air, drinking 40% adulterated milk, in an education system with 20% credibility, to get killed with 0% dignity, by USA missiles, by mob lynchings, by a badly made bridge or a pothole, or just a stampede.

MEA needs a less clichéd and more serious script for the PM's visits abroad, one where he engages with his hosts on substantive issues, rather than his own accompanying troupe and Indians settled abroad.

Update : People removed a Donald Trump poster from an auto rickshaw and urged auto drivers not to display US related symbols on their vehicles, reflecting rising public sentiment after 3 sailors were killer. The auto drivers are more courageous than Laal Aankh
Freedom is on the move... literally! Ambassador Gor kicked off the #Freedom250 celebrations from New Delhi in the most iconic way, previewing vibrant autos that will be rolled out across the city, proudly featuring President Trump and iconic American images. This marks the beginning of an exciting journey across India as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday in style. Catch them if you can - they’ll be popping up all over Delhi soon. Stay tuned as #Freedom250 travels across India!

Good Morning Shashi ! Now you have smelled coffee after the Kerala elections. When Modi surrendered under Trump's pressure, you gave him a free pass. When the opposition was demanding accountability on the trade deal & ceasefire, you chose to become Modi's brand ambassador around the globe. At times, you even persuaded others to remain silent under the garb of pseudo-patriotism. Now you are also speaking as a critic, should we try to shut you down for the sake of India's Global image?
Deeply shocking to read this official US statement, which contains absolutely no expression of regret or condolence for the loss of innocent Indian lives. How can a “friend” and strategic partner be so deeply insensitive? Why couldn’t a non-compliant commercial vessel have been stopped using other, non-lethal means? Is it not possible to disable a ship's propulsion or steering without firing missiles targeted to kill civilian crew members? Practically every merchant ship navigating these crucial waters has Indian crew on board. Are they all considered fair game for US missiles now? This approach is unacceptable and I hope @DrSJaishankar had said so to @marcorubio.

Jawaharlal #Nehru with his mother. Jawaharlal Nehru writes in his books about his mother, Swarup Rani Nehru, with deep tenderness, comparing her gentle, non-threatening presence to the formidable, authoritative figure of his father, Motilal Nehru. Nehru describes Swarup Rani as a delicate, beautiful woman who suffered from persistent ill health throughout most of her adult life. He also touches upon the cultural dynamics of their household. One of the most poignant narratives in Nehru's writings is how his fragile, traditional mother transformed when the family joined Mahatma Gandhi's non-cooperation movement. Despite her physical ailments, Swarup Rani did not stand in the way of her husband and son risking imprisonment; instead, she threw herself into the struggle. In An Autobiography, Nehru notes with immense pride how she braved police lathis (batons) during protests. In one incident during the Civil Disobedience movement, she was struck and injured by the police during a demonstration. Nehru writes about the agony of being locked away in prison while knowing his frail mother was on the streets facing state violence, yet he notes her absolute resilience.

I think about this every day. In the Netherlands, if a person dies alone, without any family or friends as mourners, a poet will be sent to write a poem and read it at the burial service. It's called the Lonely Funeral Project, and it's just humans being good humans.
