Rangers discovered a one-year-old hippo, whom they have named Owen, alone and dehydrated near Kenya's Indian Ocean coast after he became separated from his herd in 2004. They took him to a wildlife sanctuary in Mombasa, where he soon found a male tortoise with the same dark grey coloring as adult hippos. The tortoise initially hissed at Owen, warning him to stay away, but according to park officials the pair have since become inseparable. The Aldabran tortoise, called Mzee, or "Old Man" in Swahili, now eats and sleeps beside Owen. Rangers say they could not have placed Owen with another herd of hippos as he would have been killed by an adult male. The park's tourism manager, Pauline Kimoto, told reporters: "Since Owen arrived on 27 December, the tortoise behaves like a mother to him. The hippo follows the tortoise around and licks his face."

It’s important to remember that many fungal pathogens are great saprophytes. Once a plant matures, they go to town on the dead tissue, breaking it down. Knowing how much damage was caused by a fungus during its pathogenic life style vs saprophytic is difficult.
There’s only a couple of diseases you can diagnose when your soybeans are deader than dead, and these are them. Best time to diagnose problems in your field is mid- to late grain fill! Don’t leave scouting until in your combine! @ChelseaPlantDoc

What happens below the soil surface is just as important for inoculum build-up. Some unearthed roots following the OVT harvest yesterday. Clear signs of the southern blight fungus on roots. Just because you don’t see the fungus on the crown doesn’t mean it’s not there #mscrops

In a field hit hard by white mold. Plot to the right rated a 5 on a 1-9 scale. The left one got a 9. If you had a field planted with the variety to the right, you might think “wow, I’ve got a lot of disease” yet you are getting protection compared to a susceptible line.

White mold is showing up under Nebraska soybean canopies. Scout anywhere you have a history of this disease, and consider management options.

It’s lovely to see all the bees hanging out in my squash flowers!!! But with the good, comes the bad. Squash bug eggs are showing up, but easily removed with duck tape.

Taproot decline, fungal disease of soybean. Symptoms include yellowing/interveinal chlorosis & necrosis of leaves. If plants are pulled from soil, most of roots will snap off & remain in the ground. A black discoloration can be seen on upper root system #Disease #fungi #Soybean

Tar spot was found yesterday in Monroe county, MI, at low levels, it’s likely in other areas given the moisture events of past few weeks @AlbertTenuta @DTelenko @badgercropdoc @MI_Corn @MichAgBiz corn.ipmpipe.org/tarspot/
