Why do crops struggle when planted into green cover crops? An overlooked issue is reduced soil temperature, created by shade of lush vegetation, hindering early corn growth. Accordingly, terminating cover crops prior to planting is vital. 🌽#mscorn #mscrops

Anthracnose leaf blight lesions are tan or brown with dark margins. It is most common where corn follows corn and seldom causes yield loss. Occurrence of leaf blight and stalk rot is not necessarily related despite being caused by the same pathogen. #corn #disease #grow26 @DTelenko @alisonrISU @MandyBish1 @baldpathologist @alabamaED @badgercropdoc @MartinChilvers1

Had someone text me the other day with “disease” pics in soybean. If you spray a fungicide that contains prothioconazole, regardless of trade name, you may injure (or burn) the foliage just like the pic. Injury will look worse 21-28 days post-application @MSSOY #mscrops

Planted @CottonInc nematode trial yesterday @ufifasnfrec. We are testing resistant cultivars, in-furrow nematicide, and seed treatment nematicide for reniform nematode management. Identical trials are being conducted across the cotton belt against either root-knot or reniform.

The “bug peeps” (@DonCook6 & @TylerBTowles) would be happy that I pay attention. Some spider mites working on some corn @MStateCorn #mscrops

Some early stages of Physoderma getting started. Not a simple one to diagnose with just the leaf lesions. Look for the midrib lesions that are the more characteristic brown coloration #mscrops

Boots in the field are vital. Nitrogen losses are difficult to predict, but frequent scouting can reveal needs. Deficiency first appears on lower leaves and the distinctive pattern on corn is unmistakable. Thus, you can positively ID this issue and respond immediately. 🌽#mscorn

Several calls about poor soybean nodulation this week, mostly on fields new to #soybeans or out of beans for 3–5 years. Inoculants are living organisms—storage, treatment combinations, and time to planting matter. No nodules by V4–V5? Apply 60 lb N now and another 60 lb at R1–R2.

Twas the night before tar spot, when all thru the field Not a creature was stirring to reduce corn yield Ears were all growing kernels with care In hopes the combine soon would be there The silks were nestled snug in their beds While visions of pollen grains danced in their heads
