I made the point that Germany's new (and first) National Security Strategy demonstrates a country still coming to grips with Xi's China, while the concept of "de-risking" isn't yet clearly defined.

Hier im Kanzleramt findet gleich die „Pressebegegnung“ von Kanzler Scholz und Chinas Premierminister Li Qiang am Rande der Regierungskonsultationen statt - offenbar sind keine Fragen der Journalisten zugelassen. So etwas habe ich in Deutschland noch nicht erlebt.

The political relationship is in flux. Chancellor Olaf Scholz appears to want to deepen - or at least maintain the current levels - of relations. The Greens, in charge of the foreign and economy ministries, are pushing for a harder line.

This internal tug of war is apparent in the just-released National Security Strategy and will further be revealed in early July, when Germany is expected to (finally!) release its China Strategy.

And German automotive companies, some of which have a large share of their profits deriving from China, are losing market share due to their inability to compete with Chinese-made EVs in China. (As a sidenote, the EU is worried about Chinese EVs in its own market too.)
