A Sudanese migrant tries to behead a man, and Chris wants to talk about Loyalists. He is right that these thugs pounced opportunistically on this attack to riot. He then willingly piles in on these riots to (similarly) opportunistically avoid the conversation about immigration.
"There are undoubtedly many racists within the nationalist community in the north, but it remains striking that this horrific knife attack did not precipitate widespread protests and racist attacks within nationalist and republican communities, but instead triggered further bouts of prejudice-filled riots and assaults on minority communities across many predominantly loyalist districts." "we must play our part providing a safe home for refugees." That's a conclusion, not an argument. It's just stated as if it's a fact. You have to be able to hold mature conversations around asylum and immigration, and people cannot just throw sweeping statements in, unchallenged.
Immigration is a good thing and we must play our part providing a safe home for refugees. This is best done through Irish Unity so we can take an all-Ireland approach without interference from Britain. One policy, one island, one country. @IrelandsFuture @irishborderpoll

"Will trade racists for refugees". Any/ all refugees? Stephen Ogilvie's attacker was a refugee. Here's a really important reality: some refugees are dangerous. Any good immigration system would let the safe refugees in, and keep the dangerous ones out. That's not racist.

I'm not self-described. I am a philosopher. Not that it's relevant. I'm not angry. I find it interesting to see the signs held up today at this rally. What we should all be advocating for is safe, controlled immigration. But apparently that's "racist". That's what I want.
The self-described philosopher is angry people held a rally in Belfast to empathise with families targeted by racist thugs.

Belfast stands in blanket, unwaivering solidarity with ALL refugees? No restrictions, no caveats, no boundaries? Then it must accept that it stands in solidarity with Stephen Ogilvie's attacker. I do not.
Who is Belfast? This is Belfast. A city for all. Belfast stands against racism. (pic © Reuters)

As a man is fighting for his life in hospital, 3000 people take to the streets, not to protest that abhorrent act of violence, or to say they oppose it ... No, they take to the streets to virtue signal. Not one of them cares about the negative impacts of uncontrolled immigration.

"A riot is the language of the unheard." That's not a quote from some loyalist activist or Unionist. That's a quote from Martin Luther King. Are we listening? There are (many?) racist thugs among them, no doubt. Paramilitaries, too. Their violence is wrong. But are we listening?

Another anti-Unionist commentary, painting racism as a trait which is the private possession of Unionism. Then, worse still, claiming (as though it's a fact) there exists a relationship between the riotous violence and political discussion around immigration.
Jonathan Buckley floundering on @bbctheview Perhaps he should address the relationship between racist violence being almost exclusively a feature in loyalist areas & alarmist rhetoric re ‘alien culture/mass immigration’ being exclusively the language of unionism in this state.

In a country led by a FM who claimed there was "no alternative" to the violent acts of the IRA during the troubles, now more than ever is a time to state that an alternative is always available. As she rightly calls out these violent riots, maybe she can reflect on the past, too.

1/ After George Floyd's tragic murder, protests and riots took place across the US. Whilst most were peaceful protests, the violent riots resulted in $1-2billion of damage. Were those riots ever described as "racist"? Our willingness to call out racism should be consistent.

3/ The truth is, it is human nature for some people to hate others. When we reduce that hatred to a trait which is the private possession of one part of humanity, we simply show our own prejudices & skewed thinking. Hatred and violence is unfortunately a universal human quality.

2/ Opportunistic thugs and racists exist in every single part of society. Some people, of limited intelligence, wait for tragedies like what happened on Monday, and are ready to pounce. To paint that as a trait unique to Unionism/ Loyalism is dishonest.

Sorcha and her Alliance colleagues demanded that you don't view or share the original horrific attack. She wants you to see this, though. Local thugs require our outrage, and there are points to score against political opponents. A foreign thug requires a "calm response".
A child being rushed from a burning building by a riot police officer into a police landrover as everything goes up in flames. I hope those who fanned the flames are content with themselves. Because they knew this violence was coming. You can't light the touch paper and expect us to believe you when you walk away and say "how awful". How some politicians in Northern Ireland have conducted themselves in the last days, months and years has in huge part contributed to this. Absolutely disgusting.

The truth is, thugs and criminals exist in every part of the world. We are obligated to deal with homegrown thugs because this is their home, and we need to take that responsibility as a society. We are not obligated to take thugs from other countries to fix their problems, too.

When anyone mentions the fact that this attacker was Sudanese, they are called racist for mentioning it. It's seen as race-baiting. But when an entire community (Unionism) is brandished "more racist" than other people, it's fine? Racism is evident across the entire human race.
Ben Lowry: "There's a determination to depict Unionists and Loyalists as more racist than anyone else. -That's entirely wrong " Jackie Long #c4news "But most of the chaos of last night was in Loyalist areas wasn't it?" Ben Lowry: "Yes, it was” 🤔 #c4news #belfast

This is a stupid argument. The Shankill Butchers were brutal savages. The fact that they were from Belfast does not justify weak borders so that we can take brutal savages from other countries. It's not amnesia. The open-border brigade has to own their idea, and its consequences.
The horrific knife attack isn't new nor "alien” to NI. The Shankill Butchers were Belfast born & bred. They cut throats from ear to ear. Let’s not engage in historical amnesia just because previous barbarity was never videoed nor went viral. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/comme…

If the outworking of "inclusion" is this, I'd pass. This is not about diversity and inclusion in society. It's about making sure that people are safe. NI has soft borders, both in relation to the UK, and with RoI. This tragedy could have been avoided. It's that simple.
‘I have no truck with your fake news.’ First Minister of Northern Ireland Michelle O’Neill dismisses GB News’ Dougie Beattie’s questions over whether Northern Ireland has ‘a porous border’.

The existence of a homegrown murdering savage does not excuse allowing a foreign national savage to come to NI to attempt to behead someone.
Was up at Kinnaird earlier, I reported there in 2019 when Frances Murray, and Joseph Dutton were stabbed to death, their killer was running around the Antrim Road covered in blood before being caught, not only is knife crime not new to NI it isn’t even new to that street

Another disgusting comment. What value does this bring to the conversation? Serious questions need to be asked about building a safe immigration policy. This type of comment paints legitimate concerns as unfounded. Disgusting.
