It’s difficult to convey just how bad training and professional development in education was 20 years ago. This train-wreck of a passage is from a bestselling book published in the 90s and the kind of thing that was uncritically adopted in thousands of schools.

Out of all Rosenshine’s Principles, his 6th (checking for understanding) is the most vital. It underpins everything from presenting new material in small steps to obtaining a high success rate. Learn why it’s so important šŸ‘‡ innerdrive.co.uk/blog/rosens…

What is the effect of using narrative when planning instruction? This study looked at how different ways of presenting scientific information affect university students' ability to understand and apply what they've learned. The basic findings are that it depends on what the students already know: "students with low prior knowledge benefit most from embedding educational content into a story and those with high prior knowledge from presenting a narrative context before expository instruction." sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Really important message for everyone involved in revision this half term - handwriting notes, past paper answers and flashcards helps! Yes it’s harder than typing, but that’s because you are thinking more. #beseenoffscreen #activatehardthinking npr.org/sections/health-shot…

ā€œA generic approach to oracy would be bad. We don’t need a diktat that every lesson must include a debate or speech. But a disciplinary approach, recognising the crucial role of speaking & listening in maths, could pay dividendsā€: @dmthomas90 @AxiomMaths: tes.com/magazine/analysis/se…

What is the impact of ChatGPT on students? It’s worse than I thought. ā–¶ļø More likely to procrastinate ā–¶ļø Memory loss ā–¶ļø Worse academic performance Whilst more studies are needed, these preliminary results on the impact of generative AI on students are concerning. There is a broad consensus that learning needs effortful thinking and the connecting of new knowledge to existing schemas. Generative AI completely bypasses that process for novice learners so these results are not surprising. educationaltechnologyjournal…

Fabulous sunny morning to take a group of @Dunelmia KS3-5 pupils to @NewcastleHigh for the Inter-School Classics Quiz. The pupils had a great time and represented the school impressively. Lots of wins and lots of learning made for a great outing. #DCSFambition #LatinonaSaturday

I feel these are three things every teacher and school leader should know: 1. We are more similar than dissimilar in how we learn. 2. This has major implications for designing curriculum, instruction and assessment. 3. Expecting teachers to differentiate their teaching for 30 different kids who all 'learn differently' is one reason the job has been completely unsustainable for so many. (Quote from Stanislas Dehaene's book 'How We Learn')
