Full solidarity and support to Romania following the crash of a Russian drone on a residential building in Galați, injuring civilians. Russia’s escalation on EU territory is reckless and irresponsible. I condemn in the strongest terms this violation of Romania’s national airspace and of international law. The EU is united in stepping up pressure on Russia through sanctions and strengthening defence capabilities, in particular along our Eastern border.

🙌 @ADobrushi @OpenSociety #CivilSociety already brings evidence & expertise - the gap is presence. Too often it is not around the tables where decisions are being made. That is the 🔑 difference between being consulted & being a democratic partner in shaping #enlargement policy.

A big step forward for Albania on its path to EU membership! With Albanian Prime Minister @ediramaal and Cypriot Deputy Minister for European Affairs @marilena_raouna in Brussels today, Albania reached the interim benchmarks, and we set the closing benchmarks for fundamentals such as an independent judiciary and anti-corruption measures. This is a major milestone as it allows #Albania to start closing negotiating chapters. Now begins the most demanding phase of the negotiations, preparing to join the Union, and further build the trust with Member States.

Pleased to speak at @iiea event on “The Challenges of Populism.” When people feel unheard, frustration can turn into alienation and populists offer simple answers to complex challenges. The answer is deeper democracy. Europe needs stronger civic voices.

I stand in full solidarity with the Baltic states. My visit to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania last October, some three days after my inauguration, expressed that support. I stand with you again today.

Russia’s public threats against our Baltic States are completely unacceptable. Let there be no doubt. A threat against one Member State is a threat against our entire Union. Russia and Belarus bear direct responsibility for drones endangering the lives and security of people on our Eastern flank. Europe will respond with unity and strength. We will continue reinforcing the security of our Eastern flank with strong collective defence and preparedness at every level.
