The US and Iran have announced a deal to end the war and re-open the Strait of Hormuz. This marks a potential breakthrough. It can give much needed space for deeper negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and other critical issues. Once implemented, the deal should also ease the global energy crisis. I have spoken to my Iranian and Gulf counterparts in recent days, and today, EU Foreign Ministers will discuss how the EU can be closely involved in the next phase. From economic leverage to nuclear expertise and longstanding relationships with Gulf partners, the EU stands ready to contribute to a sustainable resolution.

I welcome the agreement reached between the US and Iran, following sustained diplomatic efforts by several partners. The priority now is its swift and full implementation by all parties. This agreement should allow for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Freedom of navigation must be restored toll-free. This is essential for regional stability and the global economy. It opens the door to broader negotiations on peace and security in the Middle East. And should end Iran’s nuclear and ballistic programmes and its destabilising activities in the region. And of course there can be no peace in the Middle East while Lebanon is in flames. Once again Europe calls on all parties to respect Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity and implement a genuine ceasefire. In Evian, G7 leaders will meet partners from the Gulf and the wider Middle East. Europe is ready to play its part. This crisis also carries a clear lesson. Once again, energy dependencies have been weaponised. We must diversify our supply routes and develop alternative export corridors to diversify away from the bottleneck of Hormuz. We will discuss this, and more, in Evian.

I welcome the agreement just announced between Washington and Tehran. I look forward to an end to this costly war and to the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. I commend the tireless diplomatic efforts of all those who made this deal possible. Weapons must now fall silent, and outstanding differences must be resolved by peaceful means, in accordance with international law. The European Union is ready to contribute to advancing a comprehensive strategy for lasting peace across the Middle East.

On June 15, 2026, the Gulf Research Center Foundation’s Brussels Office co-organized a workshop with NATO @NATO entitled “Mapping Regional Security Frameworks and the Future of #NATO-#Gulf Cooperation” at NATO Headquarters in Brussels. The workshop was opened by H.E. Javier Colomina @JavierColominaP, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood and Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy. H.E. Dr. Abdel Aziz Aluwaisheg @Abuhamad1, Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Negotiation at the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) @GCCSG, also participated in the discussions alongside senior officials, policymakers, experts, and practitioners from both the Gulf and NATO member states. As the first in a planned series of dialogues, the workshop provided a platform for in-depth discussions on evolving regional security dynamics, the future of NATO-Gulf cooperation, and practical pathways for strengthening institutional engagement and operational coordination between the two sides.

If the #US is reordering its priorities in the Middle East and #Europe is not stepping up to fill the vacuum, and the regime in #Iran remains intact and empowered, it is very likely that the new normal in the region will be defined by perpetual chaos that includes: #terrorism, drone and missile attacks. No matter what acrobatics are used to explain the #US_Iran_MOU the view from Tehran is clear — the US blinked first. This has left the countries of the #GCC (close, strategic allies of Washington) and #Jordan more exposed to Iran’s aggression.

About Iran and the US 🇮🇷 🇺🇸 Let me get this straight: the US and Iran have reached a “breakthrough” agreement whose headline achievement is… reopening the Strait of Hormuz. But the strait was already open before the war started. Congratulations to the American negotiators on successfully returning to the status quo ante, now with a complimentary “permanently toll-free” upgrade, as if anyone was charging tolls there to begin with. The text of the agreement hasn’t been released yet, but the two sides are already publicly contradicting each other on the most basic question of what happens next. Tehran says nuclear talks will begin only once billions in frozen funds are released. Washington says: no, they won’t. And notice what’s quietly absent from the celebration: - Iran’s nuclear ambitions, unaddressed. - Security guarantees for the Gulf states that Tehran actually attacked, nowhere to be found. - Economic reparations to those same states, not even a footnote. So they’ve “resolved” a problem that didn’t exist last year while leaving every genuine driver of the conflict untouched. The discussion underlined a difficult reality - humanitarian needs are rising, resources are shrinking and disruption is becoming the norm. Stronger partnerships, donor coordination, private-sector engagement, AI-enabled decision-making and locally shaped responses will be essential to deliver aid faster and more effectively in an increasingly volatile geopolitical environment.
