Danny Hurley and his staff are amazing.
But his predecessor, Jim Calhoun, is the most underrated college coach in history.
When Calhoun took over at UConn, he didn't have the luxuries of Bobby Knight, Dean Smith and Coach K (recruiting to an elite academic program or a storied franchise). Yet he still managed to create a coaching legacy of a similar magnitude.
"You can only be good at two or three things. You can't be good at everything."
"When you walk into someone else's practice, you should be able to figure out what is important to the coach and the team in the first 15 minutes.”
Attention to detail and emphasis, particularly on rebounding, were part of coach Calhoun's pillars. He is widely regarded as the best rebounding coach in history.
He was also incredibly charismatic, hilarious and a recruiting powerhouse. Here's his charisma on full display:
'Hit him you motherf***er'
'My best advice to you.....shut up'
