All towns in Britain could soon get blanket 20mph zones after government advisers said adding individual signs for targeted areas is “too expensive”.
The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) has told MPs that the cheapest way is to slash the default 30mph limit across every built-up area and only allow councils to raise it back up where needed.
Executive director Jamie Hassall said targeted 20mph schemes involve costly extra signage and paperwork, making a national blanket approach “a more sensible way forward”.
The move has triggered fury from motoring groups who call it another cash grab from already heavily taxed drivers.
FairFuelUK’s Howard Cox warned the zones create stop-start driving and only real safety gains come from better road design and proper enforcement, not slower limits.
Wales already has default 20mph in built-up areas, Scotland is heading the same way, and 62 English councils have adopted similar policies.
Drivers were hit with a record 5.6 million penalty points last year.
