Hi all - I will no longer be posting on X as I’ve had enough of the platform being destroyed by Elon Musk who is allowing misinformation to flourish and using it to promote division and hatred. You can find me over on Blue Sky @edmatthew.bsky.social

Amazing new paper shows how the 2022 jump in oil & gas prices delivered $916b extra to Big Oil - almost all captured by Big Oil's backers Society as a whole received almost zero benefit and was, on average, impoverished: inequality worsened across the board

🧵As the Government unveils plans to boost clean power, worth noting how much public sentiment has shifted to seeing clean energy not just as good, but as a no-brainer. All voter groups (inc Reform) are more likely to think renewables will cut cost of living than raise it

When David Cameron and George Osborne ‘cut the green crap’ there were 50,000 energy efficiency installers in GB - now there are less than 10,000. Most companies collapsed and the work force has never recovered. Rebuilding this work force is hard. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5yg…

A step change: The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that in 2030, variable renewables account for 2/3 of global renewable electricity generation, rising from less than 45% today. Solar becomes the number one source of renewable electricity generation.

Death rate from air pollution per 100,000 people, change from 1990: > India up 70% > China down 68% Come on India, you can do this: >Faster renewables >Cut dirty coal >Scrubbers on smokestacks >Stricter emissions standards >Electrify everything >Enforce environmental regs
Just arrived back in Delhi to find the city embalmed in an all-enveloping burial shroud of pollution. Even at 2pm impossible to see 100m across the runway. I've never seen anything like this in forty years of living here. What a fate for the City of Djinns- still, at its best the most fascinating of cities, but currently a tragic, choking death-trap.

I always thought that industry had limited electrification potential. How wrong I was: Once we looked into it in more detail we found that the potential for industrial electrification is huge. 90% of industrial process heat could be electrified in Europe by 2035. That is what the most recent analysis for Agora Industry says.

I keep hearing that heat pumps are a niche technology and will never take off. Look at the market share of heat pumps in different European countries - in 8 countries most new heating systems installed are now heat pumps.

This is called global leadership
Today the PM announced our new world-leading target to cut UK emissions by 81%. There is no national security or economic security without climate security. That's why we have announced this target today. To protect future generations, deliver jobs and drive economic growth.
