A UK student's reaction is going viral after Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Britain will ban children younger than 16 from using social media. During a BBC interview, the student revealed her screen time was nine hours over the weekend. When asked how she'd fill all that extra time without social media, she didn't hesitate: "Stare at a wall." The deadpan response is quickly becoming one of the most shared reactions to the UK's sweeping new restrictions on children's social media use.

That’s the byproduct and goal of the surveillance state. The ability to have complete control over all online discourse and the narrative by identifying and eliminating all voices that go against whatever agenda you are pushing at that moment. The scary thing is that agendas and narratives are always changing so if you think you are “well behaved” or saying the right things today, those may very well not be the right things tomorrow, and when you have an entire history of speech logged online over the course of your life, you can and will be eliminated at any moment in time you’re deemed in violation of whatever the current narrative is. It’s a nightmare society.

Banning social media for teenagers only puts them in greater danger. Teens are forced to switch to VPNs — and unlock far worse illegal content. We’ve seen this before. When the Russian government banned Telegram, 95% of Russian teenagers kept using it. They just moved to VPNs.

The first ban is never the last, comrade ☭
We are banning social media access for under 16s. These days kids must find their feet in a world where technology intrudes into every area of their life. I just can’t let that go on anymore. So we’re giving children their childhoods back.
Community note
The UK Government's 'careful review' of the research found a small correlation between children's use of social media and wellbeing, but no evidence of a causal effect: gov.uk/government/pub… assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/696e0b46…

here's what will happen. - u16 ban passes, platforms must verify all ages - kids use VPNs, government bans VPNs - age verification infrastructure already exists, its scope gets broader, more invasive, more extreme - Online Safety Act forces backdoors into encrypted messaging, E2E encryption dies, gov can read everything you ever send - CBDC rolls out, your internet passport and financial passport become the same document - anonymous accounts posting "wrongthink" are now identifiable prosecutable - the generation that grows up with this doesn't remember it being any other way - George Orwell was right about everything - it's over
anonymous accounts demanding we end anonymous internet is a special kind of irony enforcing an age-restricted internet ban means they must verify ALL user's age. their age estimation plan will not work, it only ends in one outcome: a complete surveillance infrastructure. it's a honeypot. in Keir Starmer's hands. kids doomscrolling is a real concern, however the solution isn't handing Starmer a national social-media linked ID database - the cure is significantly more dangerous than the disease and there are better alternatives that don't infringe on our rights i want less state control in my life, not more privacy is a fundamental human right and it is being stripped from us little by little. i miss when crypto twitter used to be libertarian

Australia banned X for children but not BlueSky. Britain is banning X for children but not BlueSky. This proves one thing. It's not about protecting children. It's about censorship and controlling the narrative.

Actually, AI/Robotics will mean everyone can have a penthouse if they want. The output of goods & services will be several orders of magnitude higher than today’s economy. Read the Iain Banks Culture books for the best imagining of how it will be. That said, what is the future you want? Amazing abundance seems the best to me.

Do not allow your face to be scanned just to access social media. DO NOT ALLOW IT. No face scanning, no passport scanning, no giving them bank details, nothing. Under no circumstances should you allow this. Just DO NOT DO IT. The future is in your hands.
