I saw Masters of the Universe last night, and was thoroughly entertained in a way I haven’t experienced in a long, long time. It was fun, exciting, and totally in the spirit of the original animated TV show.
No subversion of expectations, no social commentary shoehorned in, no girl-bossing, no sarcasm or irony, no weird, unpleasant color palette. Just an immersive, colorful, fun movie with a wholesome, attractive set of protagonists. All in all, true to the source material.
And the music was phenomenal. Throughout the movie I kept thinking, “This music reminds me of Queen”—no surprise, the theme song featured Queen guitarist (and astrophysicist!) Brian May. The soundtrack was an awesome homage to 80s hard rock and synth—worthy of my gym playlist.
I dunno about y’all, but to me this feels like a mini renaissance of the American movie theater. We’ve had a run of purely entertaining movies lately, and I hope it continues. I hope these movies all make a lot of money and keep coming.
If you like this kind of thing, I definitely recommend seeing Masters of the Universe.
