Pathogens that can cause catastrophic harms will continue to emerge.
After the 3 years the world has suffered, political leaders have a clear choice: it’s time for bold, cohesive reforms to ensure a world protected from pandemic threats.

It’s scarcely believable that 80 PER CENT of acutely malnourished kids get NO HELP. But it’s true. Here is a plan to turn that round. washingtonpost.com/opinions/…
@AndreasDHaas, @ElizabethRadin and colleagues used data from population-based HIV impact assessment (#PHIA) surveys in Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to examine associations between LD and presumed HIV transmission to cohabiting sexual partners. plos.io/3K5tlDE
Although multilateral agencies eventually committed billions to help low- and middle-income countries during the pandemic, it is clear that more stopgap financing was needed early on, note @DMiliband@ElizabethRadin and Christopher Eleftheriades. bit.ly/3gcgd3H
Since the #G7 last met in August 2019, COVID has resulted in 3.5 million deaths and economic losses projected to reach $22 trillion by 2025. Now, there's an opportunity at this week's summit to find solutions for the broken pandemic financing system. project-syndicate.org/commen…
Among the key failures during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic was the slow mobilization of financing for pandemic response, note @DMiliband@ElizabethRadin and Christopher Eleftheriades of @RESCUE_Airbel. bit.ly/3w8GtBr
Very welcome support from @FT for the proposals of the @TheIndPanel. We need pandemic prep and response to be on the desk of PMs and Presidents before next pandemic not after. Need stronger and more independent @WHO. If not now then when? on.ft.com/2Sgu5Al
More investment in US state and local public health is a really good lesson to draw from this pandemic.
Great to see Biden administration offer states $7.4 billion to recruit & hire public health workers to respond to Covid-19 and future health crises

@TheIndPanel's main report and background papers are now available to download directly from our website. The report is the product of 8 months of rigorous research and provides a package of recommendations aimed at ensuring this is the #LastPandemic 👉 bit.ly/3eDhDDp
“The failure to invest in social protection has widened inequalities, causing the most vulnerable in our societies to suffer the most from the health & social costs of this pandemic and led to the death of more than 3.25 million individuals thus far.”@MaEllenSirleaf#LastPandemic
Underscoring the shortcomings of the multilateral system to tackle #COVID19, Ernesto Zedillo calls for institutional reform so that leaders can be better prepared for future threats.

“The need to invest in preparedness and response, to empower the WHO, and to ensure ongoing political commitment to the investments required is not a theoretical concept – it is very real…” @HelenClarkNZ#LastPandemic
For the past 8 months, @TheIndPanel has been examining the state of #pandemic preparedness and responses to #COVID19. In a new report, they describe 13 key events that shaped its course, and outline recommendations to make this the #LastPandemic. Read hubs.li/H0N7Gt80.
NEW POLL: Despite some protests of state responses to #COVID19, 80% of the public say strict #ShelterInPlace orders are worth it to limit the virus’s spread. This includes:
61% of Republicans
84% of independents
94% of Democrats

Hey, it's Friday night, so let's get a little wonky in exploring just how off-base Trump and Pompeo's attacks on @WHO are.
Bottom line up front: they're attacking WHO for failing to do things that WHO...has no authority to do.
Extremely useful summary on #SARSCoV2 testing capacity from @KFF. Bottom line: by any estimate, we remain orders of magnitude short of what is needed to relax social distancing. kff.org/?p=459970
Insightful and entertaining discussion today w Gideon Rose, @maxbrooksauthor & @ElizabethRadin regarding COVID19.
(Max referenced his zombie works, metaphorical respresentation & fast versus slow zombies. The US didn’t focus on the slow zombie - COVID19 - and those get you!)
I'm seeing a lot of people uncritically retweeting this report that implies China hid ~40k COVID deaths in Wuhan.
If there's reason to be wary of China's official figures (and there is!), there's also ample reason to as/more wary of this number.
