Snapshots from my first three days of teaching! I have such a crazy to do list but it’s basically impossible to think about when my classes come in and distract me with their wonderful, first-week-of-school chaos ❤️

PSA: While I am teaching today (🙃) I want everyone in my life to know that I’ll be checking my phone, and I want you to reach out if you need me. There are so many people in my life that this is going to impact, and I want to be there for you all as much as possible.

(I’ll be preemptively reaching out to many of you, but gradually, because of the whole teaching today thing.)

whatever happens, teaching literature will be more important than ever before. they’re trying to defund us for that very reason, ban books for that very reason. but we continue to challenge the stories that are fed to us & fight for what’s human. I’m grateful to teach tomorrow.

My mom worked on the Florida abortion ballot initiative for nearly two years. She is besides herself. "We can't sustain raising 125k a month to help women travel. We won't be able to get them abortions." This is devastating.

i LOVE when taylor talks about songwriting in her songs: "don't need another metaphor, it's simple enough" "i've spent my whole life trying to put it into words" "grabbed a pen and an old napkin and i wrote down our song" "something different bloomed, writing in my room"

You can’t have reading for pleasure without easy access to books. All primary schools need a school library and librarian

800 libraries have been closed due to spending cuts since 2010 — a fifth of the UK's total. And many of those that remain have seen their opening hours cuts.

Every year, we do twelve days of books for our kids leading up to Christmas and it is one of the most joyful experiences of giving and receiving I’ve ever been part of ❤️💚
Buy your kids books for Christmas. Teach them that reading is for pleasure, not to pass a test. Let them pick their own books, let them read what they love, let them see you reading with joy and enthusiasm.

Just in: 110-year old Viola Ford Fletcher, the oldest survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre voted today in Oklahoma. I’m told she voted for Vice President Harris.

This, I must say, is the exact vibe. If you’re even a little bit raised Catholic you gotta see it solely for the number of things you get to do this about:

This is what happens when young people feel their votes matter and will have real consequences. The electoral college/American political infrastructure steals that from so many people in this country, but when we have it we go for it!
What I see. A very long line of UPenn students barely after polls opened at 7am, so excited to vote. Students are smiling & taking selfies of their voting experience. This gives me so much hope & it should give you hope too.

I was barely alive for this, but like…what about 2000?
do younger people understand that prior to 2020 the votes were pretty much all counted the same night as the election

1/ This year my school library has loaned more books than ever before. I’ve spent 2 years building up a collection of books that the kids actually want to read - comedy, romance & crime are our most popular genres, comics the most popular medium. Years 7, 8 & 9
