Happy Pride Y’all! I wanted to make sure some incredible LGBTQ people that have contributed to science are recognized like Ben Barres, Sara Josephine Baker, Sally Ride, and Alan Turing. Much love and appreciation to all current LGBTQ scientists as well!

📣 new preprint multimodal atlas. Imaging scRNA, 57M cells. 🧬🔬 Cells are complex dynamical systems — but most ways we measure them destroy them. We asked: how does live imaging compare to scRNA-seq, the field’s gold std? The answer surprised us 🧵 biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

Mesmerizing light sheet imaging of neutrophils swarming at a yeast target! The neutrophils were labeled with SPY650-DNA (yellow) and a calcium dye (blue). This movie is part of the recent manuscript by Evelyn Strickland that we highly recommend reading! biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

We worked with @janetiwasa to realize our visualization vision with @jclandoni of how mitochondrial pearling redistributes mitochondrial DNA containing nucleoids. Super fun! Couldn’t have done any of this without support from @HFSP and @ERC_Research

Cells come in many shapes and sizes, with diverse physiological functions. But how do #organelles and their interaction networks remodel during #differentiation of stem cells into different cell types? Here’s what we discovered about neuronal differentiation: 1/13

Unleashing live-cell imaging for the masses! This is MEGA-exciting!!! Adapting the OpenFlexure Microscope for Affordable Live-Cell Imaging biorxiv.org/content/10.64898… This can fit into existing incubators and capture time-lapse experiments and feeds into existing bioimaging analysis pipelines. Thanks @wellcometrust for funding

Felix Zhou's-Segment3D is out: nature.com/articles/s41592-0… It leverages 2D cell segmentations from orthoviews to generate a ‘consensus’ 3D segmentation. It does a great job on segmenting densely packed samples, and we have used the algorithm in many applications.

Been doing a lot of time lapses of iPSC-derived cardiac muscle cells lately! Here's one of my favorites. This cell is expressing fluorescent alpha-actinin-2 and the colors represent depth. Movie length = 24h with frames taken every 20m. #microscopymonday #cellbiology @MAG2ART

iPS cell-derived cardiac myocytes (heart muscle cells) typically beat about once per second, so I usually speed up the movies I post; otherwise, scrollers might miss the action. But every now and then, a cell looks like this in real time. Could we use these rare cells to uncover mechanisms underlying arrhythmias? Probably, but the way the Burnette Lab would approach that would require a lot of description-- I apologize for using such filthy language. Description indeed...... Grant reviewers hate the uncertainty that word implies; "What if they just take a bunch of videos with their microscopes?" Well, we would do that....... and some other stuff...... the idea that we would not discover something new along the way is laughable. The "other stuff" would be pretty cool. This video shows an iPSC-derived cardiac myocyte videoed by Burnette Lab graduate student @EmmaKoory. Muscle myosin II is shown. #CellBiology
