Raila Odinga was a true champion of democracy. A child of independence, he endured decades of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya. Time and again, I personally saw him put the interests of his country ahead of his own ambitions. Like few other leaders anywhere, he was willing to choose the path of peaceful reconciliation without compromising his core values. Through his life, Raila Odinga set an example not just for Kenyans, but across Africa and around the world. I know he will be missed. Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Kenya.

President William Ruto has this morning signed the Supplementary Appropriations II 2024/25 into law. What are seeing here? · Recurrent spending increases by Kes 138.87 billion · Development spending decreases by Kes 25.0 billion · Total national government ministerial expenditure increases by Kes 113.87 billion · Judiciary budget increases by Kes 470.0 million Overall changes to the 2024/25 budget: · Budget net redemptions stands at Kes 3.991 trillion (in essence, we pretty much are back to where we were in the initial 2024/25 budget...did we really need Supp. I?) · Fiscal deficit widens to Kes 875.54 billion (the tabled Supp. II had put this at Kes 862.47 billion) · Fiscal deficit as a % of GDP 5.02% (the tabled Supp. II budget had put this at 4.97% of GDP) · There was a deal with the IMF that the fiscal deficit would not exceed 4.3% of GDP in 2024/25 (earlier ceiling was actually 4.0%, then Finance Bill 2024 collapsed)...but why would we care now? We've pulled the plug on the 9th Review

What do jobs look like for people who work in the international development and humanitarian sector? Obviously bleak in the short run, and dire for families with two earners in the sector. If you're a student or young person who hoped to enter this industry, some thoughts.

It baffles me, just how low people can go, for political expediency. Free Kizza Besigye NOW!
As a family, we are deeply aggrieved by the brutality and lawlessness with which President @KagutaMuseveni and his son @mkainerugaba continue to persecute @kizzabesigye1. Their violence is not just an abuse of power—it is a crime against us, as a family and against Uganda. I thank my siblings for this statement, holding them to account. But let this be clear: no crime or injustice ever fades away. Walk away from this path of violence. #FreeKizzaBesigye #FreeObedLutale

I've documented USAID projects in 27 counties across Kenya and in more than 10 countries across Africa for the last decade. Here's my take on the apparent end of USAID as we've known it.

My heart goes out to all workers and beneficiaries of USAID. This is heartbreaking and has been said, it could mean loss of life, quite literally. USAID's PEPFAR program has been supporting HIV pandemic control in over 50 countries and is credited with saving over 25 million lives in the last 20 years. South Africa alone has about 8 million living with HIV and has been heavily funded for antiretroviral therapy. Yes, Kenya's gains against HIV prevalence has USAID to thank. This shutdown could mean drug supply interruptions, viral rebounds, drug resistance, and death. USAID also supports TB diagnosis, treatment programs, and malaria control efforts from Nigeria to Uganda. Let's not even get started on maternal healthcare. African countries must intervene through their national budgets. Otherwise, the gains made will be dramatically reversed.

Historical Irony: Kenya sends its police to Haiti to fight Jimmy Cherizier's gang members who have made the country ungovernable. Kenya revives Mungiki gang and allows its leader Maina Njenga a free reign to disrupt meetings in central Kenya. Are we really serious?

A cabinet secretary's son was abducted by the National Intelligence Service. It took a call from the president to have him released. This account from Justin Muturi is as dramatic as it is disturbing.

The year 2025 will require all of us to work together to survive. Step out of your comfort zone, build a small community of genuine, authentic people around you, and speak your truths openly to one another. Create a safe space for self-expression. We are under siege, unfortunately, we have placed ourselves in this position through years of accepting mediocrity, corruption, and tribalism. It will take every one of us working together to navigate our way out safely.
