Great piece, great reminder of the joy inherent in our work. Earlier today a patient commented that care like this is more special than ever…because it’s become the exception to a rushed, commodified reality of practice.
As you know, I am a firm believer that this starts in primary care, long long before a crisis where we can get used to the idea that sometimes we have the opportunity to control a bit of what our end of life looks like and plan to try to make it so
Wonderful reminder of the impact that our words, and how they’re delivered and received, has on our patients. All the more important at a time when patients may get bad news via an electronic portal, alone with their thoughts and feelings.
A wonderful piece with many lessons.
May I add the wish that systems grant us the time that both we and our patients crave and deserve…and also that we be judged not by the productivity we generate, but by the humanity and heart we bring to our work.
In the course of pt care, clinicians are often witness to powerful, emotion-filled stories. To continue to do this work, we must find ways to replenish ourselves & reach out for support when needed. @DrHowardLiu@netflix @ThePICULife #MedTwittertinyurl.com/4fazutsp
I’m so proud of all of the people who make Narrateur possible. And I’m proud to be part of a medical school that values the role of arts and humanism in medicine.

A fantastic guide to appropriate use of patient portals; what should be expected of and by both patients and clinicians; and still yet more examples of how organizations need to support clinicians while fostering effective, empathetic patient care.
"Communicating w/ pts electronically presents both benefits & challenges. I’ve cherished when pts have shared creative works w/ me—both in person & via the portal—although I recognize this may add to my message count."— @meggerber @EricLast3@InduParthatinyurl.com/4mr59srx
Of all the procedures that require pre-authorization, low dose ct for lung cancer screening is among the most absurd. Barrier to appropriate care? You bet!
Wonderful piece! “Honor that trust” should be in our minds every day, be it in the drama-filled ICU or ED, or in the more pedestrian, but more subtly dramatic, outpatient encounter.
"Embrace the fragility of life...We’re all human. We should never forget that we often witness the low points in our pt’s lives, & we should honor that trust with dignity, grace, honesty, and humility."—Dr. Edana Mann @EricLast3@Medicalenglishbtinyurl.com/yckdj9tc
A wonderful piece that reminds us of the ripples that form in the pond of illness. And reminds us to connect with all affected. TY for sharing your experience.
"My mother had cancer while I was a pre-med student. In caring for her, I learned that it’s important for healthcare professionals to extend empathy not only to pts, but to their loved ones & caregivers as well."—Lisa Young, medical student @EricLast3tinyurl.com/ajch4f79
A brilliant thread from a colleague who truly represents what we all should want to be.
We need a wellspring of dissatisfaction, of anger, from the patients and
patients-in-waiting (I.e. all of us) to fix a societal system that’s built on inequity. This can’t go on.
