Not a criticism of people on committees, some of whom want to do more. A statement on how institutions use the labor of people in their institutions (often disproportionately people experiencing the inequity) to stand in for actual institutional equity commitments.
Most common response when I ask people on "equity committees" their primary current task: "rewrite diversity statement." P-12, HE, & nonprofits, often yr after yr. Low-impact busywork; appearing to "do" without doing. But leadership can say, "Look: we have an equity committee!"
The racism behind chatGPT that we aren't talking about...
This year, I learned that students use chatGPT because they believe it helps them sound more respectable. And I learned that it absolutely does not work. A thread. 🧵
Shairing this again as teachers are engaged in plf today! The purpose is not to criticise, rather an invitation to civic engagement & critical opportunity of learning to better serve our students & communities. We have a responsibility to uphold the well being of all our Ss.
I want to share a project from my class this week. I started by asking my students what they wanted to learn about for #BHM: Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Era, or the birth of hip hop. They picked hip hop.
My literacy lesson was taught in stations: shared reading, photography, video, and independent reading. Each student had a chance to read, write, watch, listen, and discuss 80’s hip hop culture.
Narcissism is a superiority complex. Impostor syndrome is an inferiority complex.
Humility is a commitment to seeing yourself as complex. It’s about having self-awareness, not lacking self-confidence.
The foundation of humility is accepting that you always have room for growth.
Reminds me of this! Still it baffles me how one much ‘be coachable’ s toxic & harmful to educators! Please know that you’re inspiring & incredible educator who makes lots of students seen and valued! We appreciate you❤️❤️
⤵️ important thread!

A coach (who doesn't work at my school) stopped me in the hallway to see if she could observe my reading lesson which was about to happen in 5 minutes. After the lesson she sat me down and gave me feedback.
I finally figured out why it bothered me so much.
Schools can be doing great things to celebrate & affirm Black cultures and communities and still be actively upholding systems of oppression against Black children
Congratulations, Karen!
