#OTD 10th June 1944, the quiet French village of Oradour-sur-Glane near Limoges was consumed by one of the most brutal atrocities of the Second World War. Under the command of SS Sturmbannfรผhrer (Major) Adaolf Diekmann, the massacre was carried out amid claims of revenge against the Maquis (partisans) after the capture of a fellow German officer, Sturmbannfรผhrer (Major) Helmut Kampfe, the 3rd Battalion commander of 4th SS Panzergrenadier Regiment Rounded up in the village square under the pretence of an identity check, the villagers were torn apartโ€”men separated from their families and driven into barns and sheds, where many were shot before the buildings were set ablaze. Women and children were herded into the church, which became a place of terror and death as flames and gunfire closed around them. By the end of the afternoon, 643 people including 193 children had been murdered; only a handful survived to bear witness to what happened there. By order of General de Gaulle, the shattered village was left untouched, its ruins condemned to endure as a perpetual witness to horror and a solemn warning to the living. The ruins of the burnt out & destroyed village remain frozen in time, a haunting memorial to the lives stolen there and a powerful reminder of warโ€™s unbearable human cost. Today, Oradour-sur-Glane still speaks in silence, calling for remembrance, peace, and the courage to face historyโ€™s darkest truths. #wewillrememberthem

โ€œCourageous Duty Done In Love, He Serves His Pilot Now Aboveโ€, is the personal inscription or epitaph, written on the @CWGC headstone of Victoria Cross recipient Flight Sergeant John Hannah, who died #OTD, 7th June 1947 and is buried at Birstall St James the Great Churchyard in Leicester. John, aged 18, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his heroic actions on the 15th September 1940, becoming the youngest recipient of the gallantry award. John suffered for several years from his injuries and was finally discharged from the @RoyalAirForce in 1943. His life as a civilian was a struggle and the @RAFAssociation stepped in to try and help with the Secretary General, Sqn Ldr Jo Warner had been in discussions with the Czech Government for sick RAF men to visit Czechoslovakia for medical treatment. As John now lived in Birstall, Leicester, the Leicester branch of RAFA were in daily contact with him. After being seriously ill in bed at home for several weeks, John was admitted to the Markfield Sanitorium on 31st January 1947 and sadly died there on the 7th June 1947. See my blog for more details about Johns struggle. ๐Ÿ‘‡ historyfare.co.uk/military-hโ€ฆ #ww2 #victoriacross #bombercommand

For Juneโ€™s HistoryFare talk, we welcome guest speakers Laurence Allison, Matt Farmer and Hayley-Anne Allison who will be joining us from Oberkommando der Werhmact (OKW43). Laurence and his colleagues are from the OKW43 re-enactment group and their talk โ€œBetween Campaigns: Sicily 1943โ€ will focus on the the rarely talked about period of time from April to July 1943. During the talk, they will discuss a range of topics from the political and diplomatic stance on the Island to logistical issues posed by the evacuation of the German Africa Corps as well as the German and Italian build up of Forces and how that affected the local population, and ultimately why Operation Husky was such a speedy campaign.
