Sloppy apologetics, if contradictions were reconciled by inventing unlikely ad-hoc details, then you can reconcile almost anything.
The more likely conclusion that is driven by the data and not by the dogma, is that Luke-Acts preserves a distinct tradition of the death of Judas and Matthew preserves his own tradition.
It simply just is a contradiction!
