ALT Inferring the spatial and temporal stress evolution of magmatic systems, and associated magma dynamics, inherently requires the use of modelling to link monitoring surface observations to subsurface processes. Advances in computing power, coupled with improvements in the understanding of magma plumbing systems and the spatiotemporal resolution of monitoring data have enabled the development of a new generation of geophysical and geodynamic models. New models have led to better constraints on the location, volume, rate, timing and mechanisms of magma supply, storage, and failure (amongst others), and provide critical advances for eruption forecasting and hazard assessment. In this session we will explore the current and future capabilities of numerical models for constraining the stress evolution in magmatic systems.

ALT Text says: Small volcanic eruptions are often poorly preserved in the geological record, yet they can provide key insights into the magmatic processes that drive regular unrest and activity. Here, I describe the results from a range of petrological tools to explore the magma processes that drive past eruptions at New Zealandβs most active volcano β Whakaari/White Island. Understanding the magmatic system runs in tandem with our developing understanding of its hydrothermal system, in the hope that we can better understand unrest signals prior to eruption. White Island is a largely submerged island that has been active since observations were recorded back in the 1800βs and it has been in a near constant state of unrest, punctuated by small volume magmatic, phreatomagmatic, and phreatic eruptions. My work provides an important link between magma processes, the inputs to the hydrothermal system, volcano monitoring, and eruption forecasting.
