šŸ”“Breaking News - Appointed as Government's National Maternity Advisor Today, I am honoured to announce that I have been appointed as the National Maternity Advisor to the Government. This role is deeply personal to me. Before I was a politician, I was - and always will be - a mother. Like far too many women across this country, I know what it feels like to come through childbirth carrying both physical and emotional scars. That experience has shaped me, driven me, and strengthened my determination to fight for safer, more compassionate maternity care for every family. Please see my statement below ā¬‡ļø

NEW - Nottinghamshire MP @MichelleWelshMP has been appointed as the government’s first Maternity Advisor. The role will champion the voices of families let down by services. She’s also part of Nottingham’s maternity review, as a mother impacted by care.

I’m hearing a lot of concerns about what Wes Streeting’s resignation means for the various maternity reviews that have been announced. Streeting spent a considerable amount of time listening to harmed and bereaved families, sometimes against the wishes of his officials. (1/4)

NEW: Sussex maternity inquiry to review more than 1,000 cases, it’s confirmed. From a Gov promise to review the deaths of nine babies, families have fought to secure a full inquiry into care spanning years. It will cover harm to mothers and babies newstatesman.com/politics/he…

NEW - Nottingham’s maternity review will be published on June 24th 2026. More than 2,500 cases of baby deaths and injuries are part of the review, which has run for almost 4 years. It’s the largest investigation into maternity failings in the history of the NHS. @ITVCentral

NEW: The Green Party has now officially ditched its dangerous policy of promoting ā€˜normal’ child birth at its Spring Conference, I understand. Having been ā€œfast-trackedā€ this morning ā€œwith no objections or debateā€, it has now been voted through by members by 652 votes to 34.
EXCL: The Green Party plans to ditch its previous policy promoting ā€œnormalā€ births and seeking to reduce the rate of Caesarean sections. The party understands it is ā€œway out of tuneā€ with safe, evidence-based maternity care. newstatesman.com/politics/uk…

Thank you so much Michelle for everything you & #APPG colleagues do to continue to improve upon #safematernitycare Hugely appreciated
I had the honour of being re-elected as Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Maternity today at the AGM. Following the AGM, I held a meeting about safer staffing levels in maternity services. This is an issue I care deeply about - not just as an MP, but as someone who knows how critical safe, well-staffed maternity care is for positive outcomes for women, babies and families. We had a constructive and honest discussion about the challenges staff are facing, and the changes needed to ensure every woman receives safe, compassionate care at every stage of pregnancy and beyond. Thank you to our Secretariat @MidwivesRCM and all those who attended and spoke so openly today. It really is a privilege to be able to continue working together to build on our work over the past year.

What a week! On Monday, after a year of reporting on maternity failures at an NHS Trust, an independent inquiry was announced by the health secretary @wesstreeting into what had gone so ā€œcatastrophically wrongā€ at Leeds NHS Trust’s 2 maternity units. 1/6 bbc.com/news/articles/c4gpxn…

And now this - HUGE development on a story I’ve been reporting on for the last year. Before he was at the CQC, Mr Hartley spent a decade as the boss of Leeds NHS Trust - where we revealed dozens of deaths of babies and mothers may have been prevented. bbc.com/news/articles/c4gp2w…

Bereaved families have demanded the Government act on ā€œperverseā€ lack of scrutiny of stillbirths. They want their childrens deaths subject to independent, coronial oversight, and explain there is a legal duty on ministers to act. Link in next post…

This goes well beyond the local. Every journalist in the country, and anyone who values freedom of the press, should be behind @nottslive, @OliverPridmore and @nat_fahy on this. Reform is trying to suppress free journalism, and will continue to do so all the way to Westminster.

Tomorrow's Nottingham Post splash. Richard Tice saying whatever comes into his head again - not true. I won't stand for this smear against our journalism.

We really want to withhold judgement on the maternity review until it's reported, but this does not inspire confidence.
Sussex families said ā€œthe chair (Amos) told them that she was not aware of the history or expectations of the families, and that she did not have the power to decide who would lead itā€ - just wow! @ValerieAmos @DOckendenLtd @wesstreeting #carcrash bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1ej…

Families have been vocal about this for years imagine if they had listened to notts families and the families before and made these managers accountable maybe we wouldn’t be now looking at Leeds, Oxford, Sussex and many more.. #seniormanagers #noaccountability #maternity #neglect
Replying to @nancycoleITV
It needs to happen as at the minute like we have seen in Nottingham senior leaders leave before they face scrutiny and get new jobs in sometimes in improvement roles and the cycle of bad practice and harm continues!
