Great job to Rina Estera-Molina & her @Firestone_Lab team for showcasing our 13CO2 labeling facility in a high level visit! We were honored to have @DrChavonda from the @USDA stop by to see how we track carbon from plant to microbes to minerals. @Livermore_Lab @doescience
We were honored to give @USDA Under Secretary @DrChavonda Jacobs-Young a peek at UC Berkeley research during a tour of the Oxford Facility's greenhouse and field space last week. Read more about the research and her visit: nature.berkeley.edu/news/202…

Our manuscript is out: 'The path from root input to mineral-associated soil carbon is dictated by habitat-specific microbial traits and soil moisture.' We show that the microbial traits associated with soil C are not universal, but vary with soil habitat. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Soil viruses the minute the first seasonal rainfall hits the ground:

Replying to @cmsantosm
Despite vast compositional differences across soils, rewetting of dry soils consistently resulted in a bloom of viral diversity (up to a >30-fold increase in vOTU richness 24 h after wet-up!), followed by extreme turnover of viral populations.

Do soil #viruses drive #GHG emissions? In dry systems, soil microbes start to multiply rapidly after the first rain (“wet-up”). A massive die-off happens too, releasing a huge burst of #CO2. nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

In our new 'high-throughput' SIP-metaG paper, @nuccio, @AKakouridis @rachelhestrin et al. targeted the tiny habitat surrounding AM hyphae. They IDed 13C fixed by the host plant, moved by hyphae and taken up by a complex micro food web of bacteria and AOA. rdcu.be/c0sK3

Super excited to share my paper – the big project of my PhD – that looks at what happens to viruses during the magical moment in soil following the first rainfall after a long dry season. This was a big project w @SieraVirus @BanfieldLab @Firestone_Lab @Jeffinerca @UCBTagaLab 🧵

behold! a tremendous piece of work from @AlexaMNicolas et al describing the strange fascinating world of soil viruses, and a masterclass in extracting (and visualizing) trends from large, complex, and incredibly heterogenous sequencing data 🧬
