On my 1st deployment, still a PFC, Private Snuffy and I were tasked with securing some equipment after we just got off the flight line in BAF. We had just gotten back from a months-long mission in BFE Afghanistan, and we were looking a little haggard, a little dirty, and my uniform especially was looking a little worn 😂 (I had a poorly sewn crotch hole) (I think there was also a hole in the leg from trying to jump a fence while carrying a 240 at night)
This was before all the buildup.
We're on our way to the chow hall when this MSG driving by in a HUMVEE slams on his brakes, then he and his SFC passenger hop out, jog over to us, and start screaming at us about our appearance, etc. At this time, the rest of our platoon is already in the DFAC. So I look over at Snuffy, while standing at parade rest, and say, "Go tell PSG." Snuffy leaves under a hail of screaming from these 2 NCOs, but that doesn't matter. These 2 have no idea what is in store for them 😂😂😂😂
Our PSG was the meanest man in Afghanistan. Trust me, I suffered because of it 😂. ( I also suffered because I was a dumbass private)
Snuffy returns with our PSG, who tells me to "get back with the rest of the platoon." As Snuffy and I are leaving, though, our PSG, who at the time was probably the most terrifying person in my life, gets right in the MSG's face and starts screaming about how we're actually warriors unlike him; he then leans in and very quietly says what I'm guessing were threats against this guy's family line. Because he immediately gets in his vehicle and leaves. There was some words exchanged among them, but I didn't hear what was said.
Anywho, our PSG catches up with us in the line into the DFAC and says, "You two need to fucking clean your uniforms and take a shower, and you PFC VF, you need to get new bottoms; can't let these Expletive Deleted see your dick."
Civilians will have difficulty understanding what I’m about to say.
But all we ever wanted in GWOT was to be as far away from the “flagpole” as possible.
To be off on our own in the hinterlands.
Getting shot at every day was preferable to the insufferable helicopter parenting the large bases were famous for.
So yes. We would rather be placed in a higher risk situation for our personal safety than suffer through some idiot yelling at us for not wearing a PT belt on a FOB.
It was these same people who would turn us away from the chow hall because we were too dirty after battle.
We would rather risk death on our own than be ruled by risk averse midwits.
