The Palace of Soviets, Moscow (495 m) - a cancelled project from the 1930s.
ALT The palace was intended to be the tallest building in the world, with a giant statue of Lenin atop. It was meant to symbolize Soviet power and house various governmental institutions. Construction began in 1937 but was halted due to technical, financial challenges, and World War II. The site now hosts the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, built in place of the original church demolished to make room for the palace.
