Mr. Frank Baine Mayanja, Senior Commissioner of Prisons (Cooperation and Corporate Affairs/Service Spokesperson) has urged recruit warders and wardresses at the Prisons Academy and Training School (PATS) to uphold discipline, professionalism and integrity in their work.
Speaking during the external facilitation program, Mr. Baine emphasized good customer care and public relations, noting that officers must relate well with the public at all times.
He called for courteousness and empathy when handling inmates and visitors, regardless of their status, and advised, βDo to others what you wish to be done to you.β He also stressed active listening in all situations.
Mr. Baine reminded trainees of their duties, including the apprehension of escapes, and emphasized zero tolerance to discrimination, urging fairness in treating everyone. He also called for obedience to superiors and respect for colleagues.
He warned against misuse of social media, especially while in uniform, noting that the uniform represents government and must be respected. He also stressed confidentiality, saying sharing official information without permission is unacceptable.
He added that smartness is the brand of Prisons, encouraging trainees to always appear neat and professional.
Mr. Baine further guided trainees on the Code of Conduct and Ethics for the Uganda Public Service, urging them to uphold integrity, honesty, accountability, professionalism and proper use of public resources. He emphasized fairness, respect for all and loyalty to government, noting that these values are key to building public trust.
He urged recruits to understand why they joined the Service, to be proud of it, and to protect it. βMany people want this jobβlove it and guard it jealously,β he said.
The session strengthened the importance of building a disciplined, ethical, and professional Uganda Prisons Service.
