⚠️ Accident Footage with a shot of the mechanic injured ⚠️
🇧🇪 1981 Belgian Grand Prix - Zolder
The 1981 Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder is remembered as one of the most chaotic and dangerous events in Formula One history, marred by a fatal accident in practice and a reckless start-line collision during the race.
Fatal Practice Accident 🥹
On Friday, Osella mechanic Giovanni Amadeo fell from the narrow pit wall and into the path of Carlos Reutemann’s Williams. Amadeo sustained a fractured skull and died from his injuries on the following Monday.
This tragedy, combined with extreme overcrowding in the Zolder pit lane, sparked intense anger among team personnel.
The Starting Grid
On race day, mechanics staged a protest regarding safety, which delayed the start and left several drivers out of their cars as the formation lap began.
Grid Confusion
Nelson Piquet missed his grid slot, necessitating an extra formation lap that caused many engines to overheat while sitting stationary.
The Stall
Arrows driver Riccardo Patrese’s car stalled. He signaled for help, prompting his mechanic, Dave Luckett, to jump over the pit wall to attempt a restart.
While Luckett was behind the car, the Clerk of the Course initiated the start. As the field accelerated, Patrese’s teammate, Siegfried Stohr, went for a gap due to cars trying to miss Patrese’s car which resulted in him hitting his stranded teammate and to the horror of everyone Dave Luckett.
Survival
Miraculously, Luckett survived, though he suffered a broken leg and severe lacerations.
Aftermath
The race continued despite the carnage on the grid, with drivers eventually stopping themselves on the second lap.
The incident led to immediate regulatory changes, including a rule prohibiting mechanics on the grid within 15 seconds of the formation lap and the implementation of a "yellow light" procedure to allow the starter to abort the race if a car is stranded.
Zolder's pit lane was widened for the 1982 season following the universal condemnation of the 1981 conditions.
It’s actually unbelievable watching this unfold and how it was possible the race started.
Not the easiest decision to post but I have only done so due to Dave Luckett thankfully surviving.
When you see moments like these you really have to wonder what the sport was doing.
R.I.P Giovanni Amadeo 🙏🏻🥹
