That post from Ursula von der Leyen is getting quite a bit of attention on social media. It's mostly people poking fun at Europeans for not wanting to work at weekends (often from self-loathing Europeans). But seriously – what are Europeans supposed to say? The US and Israel have launched an attack on Iran. An attack that in no way adheres to international rules. And the Europeans were not consulted in the slightest. In Europe, we have a war – Putin's war of aggression against Ukraine. That should be our focus. The US has demonstrated time and again that it has no respect for Europe. So why should we even have any opinion on this whatsoever? Europe's view of the Iranian regime is crystal clear and always has been. That hasn't changed – and everyone ought to know it. Foreign policy is not conducted on social media – and it is exceedingly rare that a decades-long problem can be fixed with missiles over a weekend. It has never happened. It is therefore completely irrelevant what the Europeans might have to say in the middle of an attack whose outcome nobody can predict. So yes, it is perfectly reasonable to announce that we in the EU will meet on Monday – and yes, there has undoubtedly been a great deal of inter-European communication in the run-up to this attack and over the weekend, but political decisions are simply best taken when proper procedures are followed and a strategy is put in place. Trump may well believe that problems are solved with bombs and idiotic pronouncements on social media, but day by day the long-term costs of this behaviour are mounting – geopolitically and economically. And yes, when the time comes to clean up after Trump's mess, I rather suspect the Americans will come expecting the Europeans to muck in with the clean-up. That'll be a no from us.

In computing, we take imagination and make it manifest in the form of software and hardware. There exists a sequence of barriers through which we must pass to make it so. First, there are the laws of physics. We cannot send information faster than the speed of light. There are fundamental limits as to the amount of information we can store in a given space. Thermodynamics presents considerable engineering challenges, particularly as we craft smaller and smaller devices. Next, there is the challenge of computability. We must turn theory into algorithms, and at scale we must make those algorithms fast and efficient. Design and then architecture are the next challenge. Weaving algorithms and data into systems that are functional, understandable, maintainable, and that can evolve calls us to the exquisite dance between art and science, compelling us to push the limits of our human creativity. Organizational issues rise to consideration. One developer can do remarkable things, but to release systems that are durable, that are resilient, and that work at global elastic scale requires a team. And then there are economic realities. Our dreams may be expansive, but in the end bringing them to life may be more expensive to build and to operate that we can afford. Finally, there are moral and ethical issues. There are many things we can build out of hardware and software, but our shared humanity requires us to examine if we should build them. This is the nature of development, and why hardware and software and systems engineering remain a very human problem to which we must apply all our knowledge and talent.

Es ist bemerkenswert, wie viele junge Menschen heute „gegen Krieg“ demonstrieren und dabei so tun, als sei Kapitulation eine moralische Kategorie. Als könne man sich einfach ergeben, die Hände falten und dann unbehelligt sein Leben weiterführen, möglichst bei Hafermilch und moralischer Selbstzufriedenheit. Diese Vorstellung ist nicht nur historisch falsch, sie ist gefährlich naiv. Wer glaubt, ein imperialistisches Regime lasse besetzte Bevölkerungen einfach in Ruhe, sollte sich anschauen, was in der Ukraine passiert ist. Nach der Besatzung folgten Zwangspässe, Repression, Entrechtung, und am Ende Rekrutierung für die Armee der Besatzungsmacht. Menschen wurden an die Front geschickt, nicht trotz, sondern wegen der Kapitulation. Das ist kein Ausrutscher der Geschichte, das ist ihr Muster. Und genau hier liegt der fundamentale Denkfehler bei Leuten wie Ole Nymoen. Wenn er argumentiert, Systeme seien letztlich austauschbar und es lohne sich nicht, für irgendein System zu kämpfen, dann offenbart das keine radikale Klarheit, sondern eine erschreckende Blindheit für Rechtsstaatlichkeit. Denn Systeme sind nicht gleich. In Deutschland gibt es Abwehrrechte, Gewaltenteilung, unabhängige Gerichte, Pressefreiheit, Opposition. In einem autoritären, imperialen System wie dem russischen hast du keine Rechte vor dem Staat, sondern nur Gnade auf Widerruf. Wer diese beiden Ordnungen gleichsetzt, argumentiert nicht pazifistisch, sondern zynisch. Denn diese Gleichsetzung funktioniert nur für Menschen, die nie erfahren mussten, was es heißt, unter einem Regime zu leben, das Loyalität erzwingt, notfalls mit der Waffe in deiner Hand und einem anderen Staat auf der Brust. Natürlich kann man Wehrpflicht kritisieren. Man kann den Staat kritisieren. Man kann sogar Krieg kategorisch ablehnen. Aber zu behaupten, man müsse nur nicht mitmachen, und alles werde gut, ist kein moralischer Mut, es ist politische Infantilität. Frieden entsteht nicht durch Wegsehen. Und Freiheit stirbt nicht zuerst im Schützengraben, sondern im Kopf, wenn man aufhört, Unterschiede zwischen Unterdrückung und Rechtsstaat überhaupt noch wahrnehmen zu wollen.

Für welche „Meinungen“ gilt das genau? Ich vermisse bei Ihrer bürgerkriegsähnlichen Darstellung die Klammer. Alle Fälle von Brandstiftung, Schmierereien und Exkrementen im BK haben ja nichts mit Meinungsfreiheit zu tun. Die ist ein Schutzrecht gegen den Staat. Hier aber handeln Privatleute, die straffällig werden. Wo man sie findet, werden sie verfolgt. Übrigens haben solche Raten von Neonazis gegen Kommunalpolitiker erst zu einigen der heute zu Recht wieder kritisierten Strafnormen—Erweiterung der Beleidigungsdelikte—geführt. Das Austesten dessen, wie weit Art. 5 GG schützt, wenn man jemanden gröblich beleidigt, ist zwar en vogue. Aber streng genommen ist das ja auch nur ein Spiel mit der Provokation. Bei dem man sich manchmal die Finger verbrennt. Man kann die Strafverfolgung jeweils kritisieren. Aber ihr Grund ist ganz klar nicht die Haltung des Sprechers. Sondern die konkrete Ausdrucksform. Findet man Habeck doof oder seine Politik, ist das 0,0 strafbar. Beim „Schwachkopf-Meme“ kann man halt darüber streiten, ob es strafwürdig sein sollte—die bestehenden Gesetze regeln das so—aber die Haltung hinter dem Meme ist voll von der Meinungsfreiheit geschützt. Den Unterschied sehen Sie doch, hoffentlich, oder? Ich habe persönlich genug davon, dass nicht mehr Kritik geübt, sondern einfach so getan wird, als lebten wir in Russland.
