Do you like animals? Do you especially like their parts? Are your favorite parts of animals cuttlebone and nictating membranes? Then you will love my new paper, and the other fantastic essays, in this collection.
Something like what Ted Chiang says here is right. Rational activity is vital activity. Before you can determine whether something is intelligent you have to establish that it is alive. And the vital activities of terrestrial beings are hierarchically ordered.
Do people really not see the difference between
(1) you writing a paper and then using AI to do some minimal copy-editing, and
(2) AI writing a paper and then you do some minimal copy-editing
NEW: a report from Vanderbilt and WashU just dropped, taking on the "state of scholarship in the humanities and social sciences," a big topic among critics of higher ed.
Read along w/ me 🧵
My totally original idea is that everyone who tries to pass off AI generated work as their own should be forced to wear a giant ‘A’. It should probably be some shade of red so it really pops
I do as well. On big projects I use Latex. But even then I fill in the bib entries by hand. (It helps that I’m in the humanities, so I’m not expected to cite hundreds of papers I haven’t read.)
Imagine spending your whole life becoming an academic expert. Then a random guy online tells you that you are wrong about your own field. And he's right. But you can never admit that. Because it would mean admitting that your life was a lie. That is the dilemma of many academics.
I just saw that James Redfield passed away. One of the great joys of being a professor at U Chicago was the faculty meetings for the humanities core. It was amazing to teach the Iliad and be able to talk with him about it every week. He was as kind as he was brilliant. RIP
I'm grateful to @DouthatNYT for inviting me on his podcast to discuss the fate of the liberal arts and humanities in the age of AI. I hope that all those who follow higher ed and care about the liberal arts will listen.

On my next paper, I’m going to cite a couple hundred p-hacked, unreplicable papers I haven’t read. The dozen coauthors I’ve never met and can’t vouch for can add some more. This the very nature of research.
UChicago is launching an initiative that will guarantee free tuition for families with incomes below $250,000, starting in fall 2027. The College will provide free housing and meals and waive fees for families with incomes less than $125,000. Learn more: ms.spr.ly/6014vuUPM
lol. I just looked up an old attempt (over 20 years ago) to translate the Odyssey. I went with “the man of tortuous paths.” I will not defend this choice on either linguistic or poetic grounds. 😂
Knowledge of ancient Greek is necessary to have an informed opinion about translations. But it’s certainly not sufficient to have a judicious or insightful opinion. I’ve seen a lot of “experts” making wild claims and arguments here.
I have long admired the philosophy department @UVA and am incredibly fortunate to be part of this community and teach their amazing students for the next two years.
I've finally finished up my last week of teaching at UTulsa and I'm thrilled to share that Chris and I are moving to Charlottesville in June where we will both be taking up positions @UVA. Some pics of my last few visits on grounds to celebrate--I can't wait to get back! 🧵(1/5)
