Educators from the GLOBE Mission Earth project participated in a community of practice (CoP) led by NASA Langley Research Center to refine how students interact with NASA's land cover data from MODIS, Landsat, and Sentinel-2. The CoP focused on data collection, curriculum integration, student research, and validation to refine how students interact with NASA's land cover data. New #GLOBEResearch! šŸ“ƒTitle: Evaluating Satellite Land Cover Classification Accuracy Using Participatory Remote Sensing šŸ‘„Authors: Aren Finelt, Russanne Low, and Peder Nelson This study evaluated satellite remote sensing accuracy when classifying complex urban environments. By comparing datasets from satellite-derived land cover tools and ground-based citizen science observations—including the GLOBE Observer app in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico—they found that several satellite datasets frequently overgeneralized land cover as entirely urban, missing water features and vegetation. 🌐Read it here: journals.westga.edu/index.ph…

Help GLOBE reach 2 million satellite matches by April 2027! Submit your Cloud and Land Cover observations in the GLOBE Observer app. With every observation that aligns with satellite data, you will receive an email from NASA with matching satellite imagery so you can compare your view on the ground with what’s seen from space. With 1,726,900 satellite matches to date, we have only 273,100 to go! Get started at GLOBE Observer today: observer.globe.gov

New #GLOBEResearch! šŸ“ƒTitle: Evaluating Satellite Land Cover Accuracy in a Suburban Environment Using Citizen Science: New Hyde Park, NY šŸ‘„Authors: Nandini Khaneja, Peder Vernon Nelson, and Russanne Low This study compared datasets from satellite-derived land cover tools and ground-based citizen science observations including the GLOBE Observer app in New Hyde Park, New York. Findings indicated that field documentation and community knowledge improve land cover assessment in suburban regions to account for frequent over-generalization of developed land cover and underrepresentation of tree canopy made by satellite observations. 🌐Read it here: journals.westga.edu/index.ph…
