My heart goes out to Angela Carini but also to Khelif the way the gender wars have combined with intersex dehumanisation to judge intent, deception, cheating as if people with DSD/VSCs choose their bodies and medico-legal classifications.
She can't be trans in Algeria, she must have been observed female at birth and raised as early pics show, she gained a female passport not given to trans in Algeria where legal sex change is not possible. Most likely IBA is right she has an XY 5ARD or CAIS condition but we don't know and everyone is judging and ascribing intent, deception to Khelif.
This is probably about intersex but stirred by the gender wars. If her (using raised, legal and preferred pronouns) T levels are too high or she is XY that's a matter for sports bodies but IOC ignored IBA. I feel sorry for her. It's probably similar to Caster Semenya, Christine Mboma, Beatrice Masilingi or Dutee Chand - it's always the southern hemisphere athletes of colour.
I absolutely feel sorry for the Italian boxer who lost though 5 women have beaten Khelif so they're not invincible, she may have some T or XY body structure advantage but the IOC need better rules and we need to have empathy rather than judgement that they are all "trans cheaters" for those who miss out due to different bodies they are born with and raised under different national medico-legal systems.
Intersex does make an issue for sports bodies and the rules can be heartless and unfair whichever way they are applied. Any sex/T testing has to be done on all athletes not just POC or those who aren't stereotypically female/femme. We did this in the 80s to stop E German/Soviet doping.
Some sports need an open or intermediate category rather than just chromosome or T levels tests. I would have passed the <10 T tests for the Olympics even before HRT & surgery as my endocrine & puberty condition always had me below male levels but above typical female levels. It meant, however, I was shit at sport (among men), was bullied for being small and undeveloped immasculine in sports showers. I dropped out of all team sport activity, avoided PE & showers. That said, I knew I was not a biological girl, just a reduced testosterone male who identified and was treated as "other". Fortunately I'm shit at sport so never wanted to compete!
We categorise at school by age and sex. By weight not just sex in boxing, lifting. We equalise for weight in F1 and horseracing. In the paralympics by degrees of disability and advantage. Sex can be a cruel blunt binary instrument.
Whilst discussing this can we remember intersex athletes are not cheaters but their VSCs and DSDs merit them empathy and understanding as they try to live in a binary world at war over gender and sex.

Italian boxer Angela Carini abandoned her Olympic dream and fight after 46 seconds due to the weight of blows from Imane Khelif who previously failed an IBA sex test. Ironically, 1 second for every chromosome, and in this case sex matters. I'm ashamed.
