🚨 Announcing the launch of the Qikiqtaqmiut Sea Ice Terminology book!
SmartICE team member Leanne Beaulieu co-designed the terminology book with our Inuit management committee in Uqsuqtuuq (Gjoa Haven). The committee, Qikiqtaqmiut, means "People of the Island". 1/3
This heatwave extends all way to the Arctic islands. Snow and ice is melting rapidly and too early here in Cambridge Bay (Iqaluktutiak), affecting safety and logistics for travel, fishing and research this spring.
This is all part of a bigger 'heatwave' ongoing over much of Western Canada. Inevitable that more records will break in the coming days.
This map shows how much warmer (🔴) or cooler (🔵) it is compared to average.
“Sea ice melting and freezing is like the heart beat of our world”
@Geocogito and Leanne Beaulieu from @SmartICE_Arctic are talking about how #geospatial technology can support Inuit communities in safe ice travel
What a pleasure to share our Inuit geospatial education program at the @N51Conference. We’ve had such wonderful support & interest in our #arctic mapping solutions & loved demonstrating how we are meeting industry visualization challenges! @mountroyal4u @SmartICE_Arctic
It's International Women's Day! To honor this celebration, we are recognizing the women at #SmartICE who contribute to our work. We celebrate and recognize the contributions of women today and everyday! #IWD2023#EmbraceEquity@womensday
I do a lot of crazy things for geography but this will be one of the coldest! Across Canada we are plunging into ice waters to raise funds for programs of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society- we are close to our goal! Please donate! #RCGSPolarPlungercgs.org/LynnMoorman
To the Moon! 🚀 As we prepare to go back to the Moon, new approaches will be needed to maintain the mental health of astronauts. Young Canadians in Gr. 6-12 have less than 3 weeks left to submit their ideas to our Space Brain Hack!

Honoured to receive the Camsell Medal today from Chief Perry Bellegarde and the Honourable Lois Mitchell, President of RCGS, in Ottawa. Great way to celebrate #GISDay during #GeographyAwarenessWeek @CanGeographers @esricanada@SmartICE_Arctic
The Charles Camsell Medal is being awarded to Professor @Geocogito (@mountroyal4u) for her dedication to the @RCGS_SGRC in the roles of Governor and @CanGeoEdu Executive, and creating learning resources used in educational outreach.
And this is how quickly that Arctic sea ice can change & why it is important to monitor! What a difference a day makes! This was between Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, the floe edge on the north end of Baffin Island, SE coast of Bylot Islamd, east of Pond Inlet. @RCGS_SGRC
The spring/summer break up is an important time to monitor the ice. As the ice season is coming to an end, Andrew Arreak, Regional Operations Lead for the Qikiqtaaluk Region, has been out to retrieve the equipment in #Mittimatalik! Photos taken by Andrew❄️
I love working with you, Alison @webclassroom and bringing GIS to schools as an @esricanada@GISAmbassador ! Thanks for being so fun to work with and being so creative and innovative!! @mountroyal4u @CBELearningTech@RCGS_SGRC
I’m excited to have been honoured with the 2022 Canadian Association of Geographers Teaching Excellence Award. A meaningful acknowledgement after the challenge of teaching online over the last two years! Thank you @CanGeographers ! @AdventureCanada @CanGeoEdu @SmartICE_Arctic
