The US and Iran have announced a deal to end the war and re-open the Strait of Hormuz. This marks a potential breakthrough. Overnight, Russia launched 70 missiles and 611 drones across Ukraine, including more than 60 missiles aimed at Kyiv alone. The Kyiv, Dnipro, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Mykolaiv regions were targeted. In the capital, at least four people were killed, and dozens more were injured. Residential buildings, educational institutions, and cultural sites were damaged. Russia also struck the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, set part of the Mystetskyi Arsenal complex on fire, and damaged one of the workshops at the Dovzhenko Film Studio. In Dnipro, Russian strikes hit a railway station, a college, and several businesses. In the Sumy region, a residential building was struck, injuring three people, including a child. In Kharkiv, Russia carried out a double strike, killing four rescuers and a civil protection specialist who were responding to an earlier attack. Ukraine needs stronger air defence, especially anti-ballistic capabilities, to protect its people.

Russia has struck the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, part of the historic monastery complex recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage. Putin does not only bomb cities: he tries to erase memory, identity and freedom. This is not strength. It is barbarism dressed as power. Europe must answer with tougher sanctions, full political resolve and the weapons Ukraine needs to defend itself. No peace can be built by kneeling to an aggressor.
